Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

As many other reviewers have correctly pointed out, this film has little to do with the previous two films in the REC series. Taken as a standalone horror/comedy about zombies taking over a wedding, REC 3 is a fun -- if a tad forgettable -- trifle. There's a lot of great gags and the gore effects are the best of the series. The performances are generally believable and the pacing is good. Yes, compared to the other films in the series, it suffers. But REC 1 & 2 set a high bar and this is far superior to other titles in the subgenre.

Why did they have to ruin an awesome series? They completely moved away from their intense and dark setup in attempt to bring everything to a larger scale. Which not always is the best thing to do, as we can clearly see here, this movie was a complete abomination of the first 2 movies and the story line in general, very disappointing. In this film, on the contrary to its prequels we can see a bunch of boring horror film clichés, everything is blatant and predictable. No tension whatsoever, absolutely 0 tension or suspense. The beginning was extremely boring as you could easily see what is going to happen in brief moments. The cast was horrible too, no likable characters, everybody seemed so dumb and ignorant to the situation, even the main characters. The creators also tried to introduce new mechanics of the possessed people for some reason and it looked as if the virus does not get transfered via blood or saliva anymore? Why is that? What annoyed me the most was the decision of putting romantic music in between supposedly intense scenes and fights, what is all of that about? Did they want to turn this series into a romantic comedy? Because that completely ruined the watching experience, how can you feel thrilled or scared if in the middle of a fight for their lives romantic cliché tunes start blasting?I am in total shock they decided to make a turn like this in the series, one of the worst ways to destroy an awesome franchise REC was known to be. If you are a fan of the first 2 movies, you will be much better off saving your memories of the first films and imagining the series ended there, that way you will only remember the good, thrilling moments REC had to offer.

REC3: Genesis seems to have divided the series' followers into two camps: those who hate it for taking a more comedic, splatterific approach to a franchise that has, thus far, been relentlessly gritty and relatively realistic in tone; and those who appreciate the fresh direction. Me? As a fan of outrageously OTT horror, I welcomed the change, thoroughly enjoying the dark humour and excessive gore. The film takes place at the wedding reception of Clara (Leticia Dolera) and Koldo (Diego Martín), where a sudden outbreak of demonic possession leaves the (briefly) happy couple fighting for their lives. This simple set-up allows for lots of thrills and chills, some giggles, a little romance, and, in the final act, lots of really messy gore, including that old favourite
chainsaw mayhem!Admittedly, the film starts out less than promisingly, with a touch too much in the way of build up, but once the s**t hits the fan, director Paco Plaza keeps matters moving along at a decent lick, delivering plenty of the devouring of flesh, the delicious sight of Dolera chainsawing off her bridal gown, a juicy decapitation, assorted dismemberment, and a delightfully downbeat ending.

The third installment of the REC series sees a deadly infection taking place at a newly married couple's wedding after a family member gets bitten by a dog earlier in the day. Queue the inevitable scenes of all hell breaking loose as the infection gets passed from person to person resulting in the bride and groom being split up in the resulting chaos and then trying to find each other.REC 3: Genesis unfortunately goes down the route of having nothing to do with the previous films. Apart from one reference to the previous movies, this is pretty much a stand-alone sequel, which was disappointing. Another thing that was disappointing was the fact that this isn't a "lost footage found" movie. REC 3 starts out as that type of film with a young family member (and a professional recording artist) recording the events, but after about the first 15 - 20 minutes, the film makers seem to have forgotten the type of movie that this was supposed to be and has made a regular style movie. So if you're expecting a film shot in the style of the first REC films then you will be sorely disappointed. This basically turns out to be just another zombie flick and while I usually don't mind watching a good zombie movie (i.e. Dawn of the Dead remake), I didn't "sign up" to watch one here. The whole possession thing (which REC 2 goes into) is mentioned and indicated, but really it's just like watching a film version of The Walking Dead. Except The Walking Dead is actually worth watching. Just a pity the same can't be said for this film.It gets a bit cheesy in some places as well, with the main one being the very pleasantly natured "wouldn't hurt a fly" bride suddenly turning into a lean, mean chainsaw-wielding zombie killing machine.REC 3: Genesis is a watchable movie (just), but it's definitely not an enjoyable or a good one is definitely a complete downturn in the series. I can only hope that the 4th movie will be better than this but I guess time will tell.
