Let's be realistic.

It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

"Une affaire d'hommes" is the story of two men who enjoy riding their bikes on Sunday with their pack of forty-something bourgeois .But alas Trintignant's wife is killed and he's a suspect. And his pal Brasseur is a cop .The rest is predictable. The lack of a true director is glowing here:Brasseur overplays as hell and he's almost unbearable while Trintignant is more sober and more efficient but the script favors his costar. The same goes for the dialog which would have needed Henri Jeanson's nastiness.Except for a rather original ending, the plot fails to excite and one wonders what a Clouzot or a Duvivier would have done with such a story.A good idea:the shrink asking the cop for his fees when he pays a visit to him during his investigation.
