It is a performances centric movie

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
ChicDragon
It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.

This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

As a fan of Garfield and a fan of Christmas specials I think that this is a great one that everyone should watch and enjoy sometime. Garfield points out that greatest part of Christmas (and it isn't the giving or the getting) and I think that anyone would enjoy it. The style is very simplistic and parts of it are quirky, but that adds to the overall charm of the special. I don't see why anyone wouldn't enjoy this as it has great aspects not typically seen of television Christmas specials anymore. I wish that one of the major networks would buy the rights to it so we could see it over and over again every time this year. But until then, I hope that you find some way of enjoy this special which should be a bigger hit and more memorable classic.

Is it just me or do the Garfield TV specials seem to have a real emotional touch to them that gives the whole series higher integrity than the average children's animation. If only the movie were this good. It's Xmas time once again and Jon takes Garfield and Odie back home to the farm for a good, old-fashioned country Xmas. Originally against the idea, Garfield quickly becomes accustomed when he remembers how much he likes Grandma. John and brother Doc-Boy behave like kids again and can barely contain their excitement at the forthcoming prezzies (who can?) and what on earth is Odie up to in the barn? The Garfield Christmas Special is a warm, sentimental and meaningful cartoon with great songs (once again) and the kind of everlasting charm most would kill for. Highly recommended!

[I can't be certain, but parts of this review might be considered a spoiler (Brief descriptions of a scene, nothing detailed). Just letting you know ahead of time.]What else can be said? This is a wonderful Christmas classic (I consider it a "classic" even though it was made in the late 80s), one of what I consider the four "must-see" Christmas classics (The other three being "Frosty", "Rudolph" and "Charlie Brown Christmas") worth watching every year. You'll laugh, you'll cry (Or almost cry), you'll feel warm in your heart after viewing this wonderful Garfield Christmas episode. My one and only complaint...sometime during the mid 90s, for no reason whatsoever, portions of the best part of the entire show, the part with Garfield in Grandma's lap, was re-animated. The dialog and audio track is the same, but some of the scene was redrawn with different angles, different character views, and there is even a closeup shot on family pictures is shown. Yes, these may seem to better emphasize the mood of that scene, but in my opinion the scene was fine the way it was, and I hope to someday see the original, unedited version. But, these are just small details, one minor annoyance that doesn't, and shouldn't, affect the overall enjoyment of this heartwarming Christmas classic. Whether it's the original unedited version, the version missing the "piano scene" (Which I actually have never seen, just heard about), or the version with the edited Grandma/Garfield scene, it is almost certain that you will love this show.

When this special first aired on CBS in 1987, the piano scene was edited. I didn't even notice it until I read the book version of that television special. Then years later, the piano scene was added to the special, I laughed my head off!Seeing Grandma playing the piano & singing "O Christmas Tree" in a jazz style, and ending with Boop-Boop-Dee-Boop makes me laugh! And to this day, every time I hear or sing "O Christmas Tree" during the holidays (& even "Maryland My Maryland" during the Preakness Stakes), I always have to say Boop-boop-dee-boop!
