Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

Good concept, poorly executed.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

I completely disagree with the critics here. There is some pity to have but there is nothing wrong about it. Sandra just nails the character in an hilarious way. Most laughs I had in a while even compared with bigger comedy guns. This film is a little gem. The heroine is fun, likable, beautiful, energic, hilarious, skillful but just a little goofy and virgin. No pity to be had. Plus, it's a film. The only bit I didn't like was the moralising at the end. Hilarious!

This movie is remarkable. Somehow it succeeds in effortlessly rendering surely one of the most likable screen actresses ever, the adorable Sandra Bullock, everyone's favourite girl next door (bar perhaps Jennifer Aniston), so totally unbearable that I doubt I'll ever be able to watch her in anything ever again. At least not without traumatic flashbacks to this dire drivel. Some reviews cautioned only to watch it if you're an avid Bullock fan. I would say, if you're a fan, please don't watch it – it could contaminate Sandra for you for ever. This excruciating excuse for a romcom is really one of the worst of the bunch – and believe me, I've seen some bad ones (The Holiday, anyone? I would rather barbecue my own eyeballs than sit through that again).Sandra was born to play kooky, quirky, off the wall. But here they throw everything they can into the mix, thinking a sheer quantity of oddities (for example, she's a horny cruciverbalist) will suffice instead of actually constructing a whole personality, even if it turns her into an implausibly contradictory bunch of irritating tics and tiresome traits. As for the plot, how anyone else she encounters could come to care about this deluded, obsessive individual and her ludicrous carnal quest is beyond me. It's meant to be funny that, throughout all her trials and tribulations, she clings onto the increasingly battered umbrella borrowed from the object of her lust, the eponymous Steve, like some demented Mary Poppins on acid. It's a mystery to me why someone along the way didn't bludgeon her to death with the blessed thing.Perennially in scarlet boots (Dorothy's ruby slippers, perhaps), our heroine is not a patch on that plucky wanderer but instead an infuriating blend of know-it-all verbal diarrhoea and shockingly poor impulse control. She ends up as pointless and troublesome as a fly trapped in the car with you on a hot summer's day.Her alleged erudition is also hard to credit. It seems to manifest itself in tormenting her long-suffering parents and colleagues with a torrent of facts that never seem to demonstrate anything at all insightful or interesting. She just spouts 'knowledge' like a brainwashed chimp without being able to distinguish the pertinent from the irrelevant. When she referred to 'a medical phenomena' that was the icing on the cake as far as poor characterisation went. A wordsmith would surely be able to tell singular from plural. What on earth possessed our beloved Sandra to take this part? At least Bradley Cooper and Thomas Haden Church's roles are better written and funnier and their situations more sympathetic. If you're tempted to keep watching, hoping that it will get better, please don't waste your time. It really doesn't. It really is that poor from start to finish.Except maybe for the horse incident in the wild west town.

The problem with a lot of reviews and perhaps therefore reviewers is a distinct lack of empathy. The ability to see beyond your own feelings and experience is critical in understanding pretty much anything to do with people and especially if its reviewing the value of something for others. I get why a lot of people didn't like the movie, in a way there is a lot not to like UNLESS you have know people like Mary. I've know many. Of course, I don't mean exactly like Mary, what I mean is the character of Mary in this movie is representative of scores of people who are not normal, i.e. like most other people. I'm fairly sure it could have been tighter and perhaps could have had a lot better script but there were real moments of heart and fun. It's not a block buster but very few are. It's not a classic either but again, very few are. What it is is a cute exploration of vulnerability done by one of the best exponents of that characteristic, SB!Loved it on iTunes movies and so did my wife.

This movie was very painful to watch. I would rather go to the dentist without Novocaine before I go and see this again. Sandra Bullock plays Mary Horowitz, a crossword puzzle maker. Her character is obsessed with vocabulary. Bradley Cooper's character is a camera man for the local news. Mary and Steve go on a blind date and Mary is head over heals for him. She tries to kiss him when they are sitting in his car when the date begins! They try to have sex, but it was awkward. Then the next day, Mary makes a crossword all about Steve, a person she had met for only like 15 minutes. If you want to continue with this movie from there, god bless you.It felt like her character had a case of Asperger syndrome. She really had difficulty interacting socially. She did not know how to read a person's body signs. If they are not interested in your favorite hobby, talk about something else. No wonder she kept talking to her hamster. She was repeating behaviors that was annoying like saying facts like a walking Google search. She was also clumsy. How can see not see that big hole! She really turned me off in this movie. The movie tries to play off that you are supposed to feel that she is a happy go lucky girl, but that communication that the movie is giving me is sending another message. This movie made me cringe, and there is a rant that Ken Jeong does, that has no power at all. If you want to see a good rant, check out "Waiting...". His character was a push-over, so I was expected a good rant or some vengeance. Ignore this movie
