Interesteg What makes it different from others?
Diagonaldi Very well executed
Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Stephan Hammond It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
julianbeltrame This is a minority opinion, perhaps, but I found the film charming and the allusions to Chinatown, amusing, particularly the ending. Willis is hilarious as a drill sergeant principal. The movie is a light spoof, so nobody should expect Citizen Kane or Chinatown, for that matter, but the observations about high school are dead on. I especially loved Willis obsessing over whether a student trying to warn him about the corruption all around him is chewing gum. Think Heathers, with less bite.
Tss5078 Assassination of a High School President is an ambitious independent film that tells a terrific story. It is also Directed by a first timer, who really wasn't sure what direction the film should take. Touching on many genres, it manages to succeed adequately at all of them, but gives us little more than the great story it started out with. Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson) is the male answer to Veronica Mars, but he's not a detective, he works for the paper, or at least he wants to. Out of nowhere the biggest story in school history manages to fall into his lap and the introverted Funke, quickly gains popularity in revealing who stole the S.A.T.'s. Funke soon comes to question his initial accusation and digs deeper to uncover a conspiracy that could rock his small Catholic school to it's core. I'd never seen Reece Thompson in anything before, but he does a tremendous job at playing up all the right angles. From a bullied Sophomore to a school hero and even a man on a mission, Thompson cuts through it all with ease to give an amazing performance. He's paired with Mischa Barton, who is off the charts hot and tries to distract Bobby with everything he's wanted since the third grade. Bruce Willis adds to the already talented cast, by playing a hysterical principal who suffers from P.T.S.D., and runs his school like an army base. While the film isn't quite a comedy or a drama, it features a lot of both, while telling us a really well thought out story. The talented cast and the even more talented writers, more than make up for the Directors inexperience and really make this film a winner. Going into this movie, I had a feeling it was just going to be another awful High School comedy, but it really is so much more than that. The ending puts it all over the top and will just blow your mind. The Assassination of a High School President is very reminiscent of the show, Veronica Mars, except that it's a bit more edgy and maybe that's what it needed to survive. Bobby Funke lives the dream of every bullied student and teaches us something about the way teenagers think at the same time. It's an interesting film that certainly has it's ups and downs, but in the end, the good most certainly outweighs the bad.
tedg I fell into "Brick" quite by accident. It was an accident that I discovered it, and knowing nothing about it, I found myself swirling in the story without defenses. That is why I am open to similar experiences. This actually tries much the same thing: conventional noir embossed on a comically exaggerated high school universe. I like the structure of this better, because it pokes fun at the neonoir technique itself: the detective is a newspaper reporter and the mystery is not something that discovers him, but something that is assigned. He gets the story wrong, twice, because he is being conned. The form has him as a voice-over narrator with untrusted views. He gets caught up in sex, as do we by deliberate manipulation of us both. There are some interesting reversals, the most interesting of which is that there is a conventional assassination attempt with a rifle and all, but it is BY the high school president. By the end, we are pretty tired of the mystery because the discovery has no novelty or engagement. Instead, we are treated to an imbalanced, comic satire of high school life. The extremes are amusing and a few are clever. But the main mystery disappears under it.We'll see Mischa Barton in the future, as "the girl" in some big budget action movie. The camera loves her.Ted's Evaluation -- 2 of 3: Has some interesting elements.
harmmany214 So most of the people who voted for this movie were Non US males between the ages of 18-29.Herein we have a movie that could be interesting but isn't. All the characters are overplayed common stereotypes in a private high school, and the dialogue was obviously written by a bitter male basement dweller between the ages of 18-29...just like the people who like this movie. So if you have no sense of realistic dialogue, and like poorly written, common stereotypes of high school students with a predictable outcome but written with the personality and a CHUD basement dweller or overly stereotyped frat/sex/vulgarity dialogue from the mind of someone who lacks human interaction and assumes what late 20-30 year olds would be like if they were college kids pretending to be high school kids in a predictable movie, then this movie is for you! You will love it! If you are from not the US and you think US kids are like this and fantasize about being a complete loser like them or like hating these kind of over done common pathetic trite stereotypes then this movie is for you! If you like movies that have interesting plots that are not completely obvious, and characters that are at least slightly human with realistic interactions and dialogues, avoid watching any of this movie.
