Really Surprised!

A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

First and foremost the depiction of Chicago is just offensive, gang violence is a serious issue but gang members aren't recruiting kids by offering them twice their lunch money. Another glaring problem is the forced celebrity endorsement. Nicki Minaj was sub par and common's acting was awful, and their characters added little to nothing to the actual story line. Even the addition of Anthony Anderson just felt forced, just to add an extra name to the roaster. Now what I love about the film is the return to the roots of the original barbershop movies. The pointless conversations , the banter, and the relatable characters. Growing up these movies were an homage to the everyday experiences of getting my haircut in a barbershop. There was a lot about the movie and quite honestly they could've left this series alone and started something different or given the series an entire reboot because so much of the movie had been changed. I couldn't care for the subplots and new characters but the things I loved about the movie were still there and now that it's on hulu I totally recommend watching it while braiding your daughters hair.

Calvin Palmer, Jr. (Ice Cube) is still in his barbershop. The south side of Chicago is overwhelmed with shootings. Tough times have forced Calvin to cohabit with the beauty shop. Rashad (Common) has married Terri (Eve) but their marriage is facing problems. Calvin is losing his son Jalen to a gang and he blames Rashad's son Kenny. Jimmy (Sean Patrick Thomas) tells the gang that city hall has a proposal to reduce the violence by isolating the neighborhood. Calvin attempts to stop the shootings with a weekend truce and free haircuts. Meanwhile Draya (Nicki Minaj) is trying to take Rashad for herself.I like this attempt at the subject matter a little better than Spike Lee. It's great to have some of the gang return but it's a mistake to go co-ed. The earlier movies have an interesting male voice which would be intriguing for the gun issue. Bringing in the beauty shop changes the chemistry and the point of view. Lamorne Morris is a fun addition to the crew and a great punching bag for their jokes. Nicki Minaj is a little distracting because she's Nicki Minaj. Anthony Anderson reprises his role from the original but the serious subject matter doesn't seem to fit with his silly antics. Overall, this is a compelling subject done with heart and humor.

This movie was supposed to be a comedy but quickly turned into garbage. Loved the first movie and had high hopes for the sequel and then this crap comes out. Getting tired of seeing all this BLM stuff on TV and how racism is still alive and effecting our communities but it's OK to promote and advertise that same garbage in movies. Want to overcome racism, try not promoting it and reminding everybody every second of the day about it. I'm by no way in hell a racist, so please let's not jump to conclusions. This movie has to be the worst piece of garbage Ice Cube's been in. There is nothing comedic about this movie. The movie is pure propaganda. Sadly disappointing

Friday 13 May 2016: Last night, I saw this movie and to my surprise, I liked it a lot. The movie has good chemistry between Oshea Jackson known to the film world as rapper/actor, Ice Cube and the rest of the cast. There are a lot of good African American talent in this film with Common, Regina Hall and the rest. The prettiest women in the cast are Margot Bingham and Jazmin Lewis-Kelley. But the cutest and always the most sexy is "Eve" Jeffers. Eve is naturally sexy, her look, her eyes, her lips. Eve has it all. The rest of the cast are good and well worth the price of admission.I like the fact that there was Not a lot of profanity and it has a good message about keeping kids out of gangs. It shows a positive role model with both strong black parents in the home. The only negative that I did Not like is the use of the "N" and "B" word in the film and for that reason, I will Not give it a ten "10". I do not like the use of the "N" word or the use of the "B" word for women in films. I give this film a thumb up and an 8 on the scale.
