Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review

One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.

A chronicle of a young man's rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city's wealthiest and most influential women. Bel Ami is for sure not the greatest film i've ever seen but i was surprised by the whole movie the performances were pretty good by Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci everyone did a great job and i liked the whole plot with Georges being basically a horrible person and using all those women just to get their money and i get it why he used the 2 of them but Ricci actually loved the guy and he treated her the same. Now do i think that this film deserves the ratings it gets? No but i don't blame the reviewers to be honest with you.

Plot in A Paragraph: Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson) is a penniless soldier returning from war. He travels to Paris in a search for ways to improve his social and financial status. He uses his wit and powers of seduction to charm many of the wealthy women in the countries capital.Stepping away from playing brooding vampire Edward Cullen in the "Twilight" movies, Robert Pattinson simply plays an extension of that character, and plays a brooding former soldier who only has three expressions. Depressed, brooding and smug. His performance is so similar his character here could simply be Edward Cullen pre him being bitten by a vampire. Of the female cast Uma Thurman is still attractive and owns the screen when she is on it, the often under rated Kristin Scott Thomas is solid support, but it is the delightful Christina Ricci that steals the show as Clotide de Marelle. He is a joy and I'm always impressed when I see her (albeit it not often enough)Of the rest of the cast only Colm Meaney stands out.

The movie is so much more than the trailer lets you think, there are so many subplots, not only that Georges is using women to reach his goals. I can't say I like his personality, but I can understand what drives him.The actors were very well chosen and very talented, they, all of them!, did a wonderful job! They've surpassed my expectations, especially after seeing the trailer that lets you think the movie will be full of sex scenes and only that (I dislike those scenes, something implied is so much better and tasteful). As a woman, I'm so glad I wasn't born in those times where a woman was supposed to just look pretty and have no brains while the men were considered above us. Not to mention, being faithful or marrying for love was an oddity! I recommend watching this movie. You can learn a lot from it, and be glad you live in your own time. It's a lesson of life!

I'm one of the few (straight) guys in the world that actually enjoys Robert Pattinson's movies - not a Twilight fan by any means but just because he did those movies does not label him as a bad actor in my book. I enjoyed some of his other movies including "Remember Me" and "Water for Elephants". Also I like him because I think he separates himself well from the Twilight films well, he doesn't seem to milk his popularity from those movies, he is always working on new projects. With that being said I seen this movie on Showtime and decided to give it a shot. Bel Ami, the name of the movie and the main character, is about a low-life, poor guy that makes his way up in the world by seducing women of powerful, rich men.First off the positives - the soundtrack, camera work, and overall aesthetics of the movie are great. The wardrobe is attractive and convincing, the set design is nice, and overall the visuals were nice. Secondly the acting was great. Robert Pattinson put on a convincing show with good drama acting while supporting roles by the legendary DS9 actor Colm Meaney and actresses like Christina Ricci and Uma Thurman were nothing short of great. Now for the big flop - the "story telling" of the movie. I'm not sure it's the story itself - more so the movie felt like it was "pasted" together in Apple Movie Editor Pro. It didn't feel like the story was told in a good way. The story is hard to understand, some parts of the movie felt rushed, other parts felt too slow. For such a great cast with a great list of actors the storyline just wasn't told in a convincing and conclusive way. I think this movie would be better understood by those who read the book that supposedly exist for "Bel Ami".Overall I'm disappointed by this movie. This could have been a great, underdog low-budget film. It seemed like it was heading that direction, but by the end the story just wasn't told in a great way. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it already but I would wait for the bargain bin edition if you want to pick up a physical copy. Below average film unfortunately.
