FuzzyTagz If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
Forumrxes Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
Tymon Sutton The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
Celia A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
wes-connors In 1984 London, sexy socialite Angelina Jolie (as Sarah Jordan) is startled when rugged doctor Clive Owen (as Nicholas "Nick" Callahan) crashes a charity event to slam the champagne and caviar set. A foul-mouthed rant from Mr. Owen informs Ms. Jolie and attendees they really don't understand poverty-stricken people. Jolie is moved to tears by Owen and a thin African boy. She decides to join Owen in volunteer work and they become mutually aroused, although Jolie is married to businessman Linus Roache (as Henry Bauford). The work is dirty and dangerous; Jolie is perfumed and pretty...We follow the love affair between Jolie and Owen through the 1990s... She continues to shed tears and look pretty, while he continues to rant...Acting more authentic than the co-stars are Noah Emmerich (as Elliot Hauser) and Teri Polo (as Charlotte Jordan); it might have been interesting to see them as the leads. Director Martin Campbell and company do better with subtle conveyance of adultery between Roache and Elizabeth Whitmere (as Bea). The foreshadowing provided by jeep rider Jamie Bartlett (as Joss) is also done well. Still, it's the unremarkable relationship between Jolie and Owen which commands our attention. "Beyond Borders" shouts about something much more important than mundane affairs, then downs itself in one.**** Beyond Borders (10/24/03) Martin Campbell ~ Angelina Jolie, Clive Owen, Noah Emmerich, Teri Polo
mmcewen-1 I loved this film. It reminded me of emotionally-stirring epics from past eras -- Dr. Zhivago, Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia. Perhaps that's why the cynical and heartless critics trashed it ... the romance is old fashioned, idealistic and pure; the characters are not addicted to alcohol, drugs or senseless shopping; there are no grunting sex scenes. The violence has a point. And yes, Angelina's character always looks too fashionably good and clean and gorgeous to be true to the horrific circumstances she finds herself in.It's a weeper, for sure. An eye-opener for the ignorant, uninformed and uncaring consumers of modern capitalism. A call to arms. Definitely not a typically pointless 21st Century American movie. Thankfully, Oliver Stone didn't get to direct.See it. Take out your handkerchiefs and your cheque books. This film might actually change your life.
annette-115 I am amazed by this movie - I have never ever seen anything before that touched me this much. Being unable to get the picture out of my head, it has changed my view on fugitives and those who do their out-most to help. First of all, it has changed my perspective on life, thank you for that!!! Secondly it is now perfectly clear to me, why Ms Jolie has chosen to adopt children from Etiophia and Cambodia.I strongly recommend everybody see this movie - when my children are old enough, they will definitely be forced to watch it too. What a great movie and a shining star of an actress!
katms I know everyone's commenting on the social ramifications (and failures of, perhaps) of this movie and so forth but umm...can I just be totally shallow and say I enjoyed the movie for the awesomeness of Clive Owen? AKA Sexiest Man Alive, IMHO? I remember reading a magazine bit about "best kissers" (stars kissed and told) - Angelina listed Clive as the best kisser, and boy can you see why.Watching them do a really good job together (CO and AJ) was totally entertaining - this film gets a bad rap...of COURSE it's hard to do justice to the horrifying situations out there. At least they tried. Give it a shot.
