KlangSmithToo This movie looks good and has great production values but that's about all it has going for it. I suppose it is supposed to be an action comedy, but the action isn't very good and the comedy is even worse. The most disappointing thing about this flick is that the cast is STELLAR. Most of these guys have been in some amazing movies, some of them comedies, and acted their butts off. Jung-jae Lee (New World, Assassination) in totally ripped form is an MMA fighter whose brother is kidnapped, he is framed for murder, he is framed for trashing a gangster's nightclub and finds himself the centerpiece in a high stakes game observed by a group of millionaires who wager on people's lives. If that last sentence sounded long and messy, that's exactly the problem with this movie. It is ALL OVER the place. Sung- min Lee (Robot Sound) is his trainer and brother who gets abducted and spends most of the movie making funny faces and shouting ridiculous admonitions of encouragement (what passes for humor in this film). Ha-kyun Shin (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Save the Green Planet) is the game- master who sets up the whole scenario and cackles his way through the story like an amped up anime villain. BoA is ANOTHER MMA fighter who starts out working for the villain and is added as a totally unnecessary love interest. Eui-sung Kim (Train to Busan) is the bumbling police chief who is always one step behind everyone else. Like I said, STELLAR cast and it looks like they are all having "wacky" fun but nothing gels here, there is no chemistry between any of the principals and the whole thing falls flat. It just isn't funny. Not one line of it.Unfortunately, I think the script is pretty much to blame here. The story tries too hard with too many disparate elements that just seem to be thrown at the screen out of left field. The dialog is forced and the humor is two-dimensional and juvenile. There isn't anything subtle here at all. Just silly faces and dumb lines. And the movie is almost TWO HOURS LONG. Just give this one a pass and watch ANY OTHER movie ANY of the cast has starred in and I guarantee you will have better time.
drjlo Korean cinema should stick to what it does best, e.g. disturbingly primal psycho-dramas/horror, dark and witty gangster movies, tear- jerking melodramas, etc. Hollywood-type big action, they should leave it to Hollywood. Lee playing the lead should be familiar to those who have appreciated his work in "New World" (2013). However, "Big Match" is nowhere even close to being an engrossing movie like "New World." While one can appreciate the physical conditioning and action sequences by Lee, his usual lack of acting subtlety, as well as the completely goofy tone and elementary-school level dialogue render this movie an annoyance, not entertainment. Dumb dialogue and screeching screaming from all the actors involved throughout the whole movie, along with the unfunny "funny" villain just shovel more dirt onto the coffin that is "Big Match." If interested in Korean cinema, heck just better entertainment, one should look to movies like The Yellow Sea, New World, The Terror Live, A Moment To Remember, My Sassy Girl, Beat, Memories of Murder, Spring summer fall winter.., etc.
fluffset I see in IMDb review no one do review like anime reviewer always do in myanimelist so I guess I want to try this style of reviewing for this movie. Its so interesting and simple!Story: The story is so interesting, if you've watch Shia LeBeouf"s "Eagle Eye" (2008) you may know this story unless this one is more on comedy. Choi Ik-Ho (Lee Jung-Jae) is a martial arts star with talent for action and humor. But one day, he is framed for murder. Ace (Shin Ha-Kyun) is a game planner, who makes a game for the Korean upper class. He is a villain who makes a city into a big game board through technology. Ace and Choi Ik-Ho become adversaries as Choi Ik-Ho jumps into the game to save his brother. I just copy this story line and again for me this story sounds so interesting but too bad it's too long. The pacing move very smooth and entertaining until 1 hour 20 minutes only, then somehow I thought that they should end this story here because its just become repetitive and so predictable. By the way, don't think about logic from this story, its pure fiction. Action: Have you watch a lot of korean movie like me? Or any cliché Statham movie? You should know how they fight, too bad I watched "The Raid" (2011) & "The Raid II" (2014) too many time so the action is just total obvious simulated camera editing like always. But, still fun to watch. Music & Sound: And I'm asking again, have you watch a lot of korean movie? So, you must know that korean like to use old orchestra soundtrack like Beethoven,Antonio Vivaldi,Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky etc. for example "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005). Sounds effect? Nothing new actually, just the same.Acting: This may be sound boring now but for the third time have you watch a lot of korean movie? If you do you must notice that korean always use their same group of actor so I think a lot of them are veteran so they just did a great job as always. No heavy character here, all of them have their own sense of humor's style so I don;t see any award prospect. Just want to say that its villain character played by Shin Ha-Kyun ("Save the Green Planet" [2003] "Running Man" [2013]) is so cliché.Enjoyment & Overall: This is a fun light action movie for everyone to watch, its funny and quite intense sometime and if this is your first korean movie, you will love this so much! If not, you will think that there is a lot of better action korean movie than this. Lastly, its a fun movie to enjoy with your friend.
