Surprisingly incoherent and boring

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

Now Birth is an interesting picture. After watching Dogville and To Die For (And of course Eyes Wide Shut being my favorite movie), I have been very interested in seeing Kidman pictures. She has a way about her that calls for attention, and yet you are well aware of the others in the room. It's almost annoying, but it does the job, and it does it very well. This story is about Nicole Kidman's character discovering her dead husband may be a little boy resurrected. What got me from the beginning was her new husband, who mentions at the beginning that he had to chase her to get her to marry him. He kept calling and asking for date, and eventually it just clicked. And at the very end, the same theme applies on their wedding date: She is more hesitant, and he is pulling her close. That is the main emotion I received from the story, and everything in between was very captivating, but holds nothing in the aftermath. Once you learn the child has made the whole story up, the whole premise becomes pointless except for the fact mentioned in the previous statement.6 STARS! May deserve less

I don't think this movie was brilliant or anyway above average but it is far from being a mediocre movie, it is very thought provoking indeed. It is a movie about love and how loving someone so much can be painful and derange someone. Many people will take long or never overcome a loss of a beloved one. The idea of a naked kid in a bath tub with a grown up woman is only possible for those people who unfortunately either did not get it or can't have their obtuse minds thinking in the context. The delusional situation of the woman led her to another reality and there was anything sexual in that scene. It was erotic but society tends to be judgmental and they see what they want to see. People still confuse nudity with being naked in a sexual situation, which is not. And erotic is not pornographic, it has to involve loving and caring. Someone kissing and deeply in love is erotic. That feeling of your heart pounding when meeting someone, hugging and kissing is deeply erotic while the sexual act per se can be only a physical need if love is out of the picture. This movie is deep and hard to get if you don't look it thinking of the loss she went through.

Sadly even the start to the movie was a little disappointing. Sean is running in the park, and dies of a heart attack. Would have been better served with him being attacked in the park and killed. If it is his normal thing to go running in the park, then someone seemly in their 30s falling down dead with the heart attack is a crazy start.Nicole Kidman is excellent in her part especially the zoom in facial expressions while she is in the theatre. The attachment to the child who claims to be her deceased husband seem a bit crazy considering their dialog, the lack of sharing personal details, like the smell of her hair, special moments they had shared or just mannerism would have helped the story along. There were lots of opportunity to bring out the husbands characteristics, like when the boy is in the study and talking about working, if he remembers being Anna's husband then why not remember physics that he used to lecture. Also believing that Joseph and Anna's family would allow the child to stay was just too reaching.Even the ending felt like they got bored with the film and decided to finish. A film with so many possibilities, the boy could have left with Anna, the boy could have fallen and the spirit of Sean leaving the boy, Anna could have died and he left with the body of Anna. But sadly a very crap ending.

This film is something I would recommend almost anyone, and I do not say this lightly. It is so well done and the Director and DP are highly talented individuals! The film is shot beautifully, with the Director showing his willingness to PUSH things into the realm of serious avant-garde, (at least these days!) with regards the length of his close-ups, and also his having characters express emotion in a very very understated manner a lot of the times. I am talking about the faces of the people around Anna while they are being obviously SHOCKED by what this strange boy knows!! The score is magnificent and I would love to buy it on Cd and probably will. The production design I found to be top notch also, even if it was not necessarily a difficult challenge to most people's minds. The acting of ALL principals was terrific, and Bacall was a real treat I must say!! Nicole Kidman although ever so slightly understated in conveying desperately intense emotions, nevertheless manages to make us understand the power of what she is feeling. I would guess that her performance was probably driven by the Director due to the fact that I KNOW she can be far more intense when she wants to (Australia). Huston is great as the poor guy who is blind-sided by this fascinating and interestingly enough TRUE SCENARIO (it happens is what I mean). Reincarnation is a fact of our existence that I have NO DOUBTS ABOUT ANYMORE, I only wonder if the scenario in this picture is within the realm of possibility due to the fact that we usually have at the very least SEVERAL years go by if not a century before we incarnate in this dimension. So beyond the fact that I question the logic of the idea, the only problem I have with this aesthetically highly satisfying picture is the ending which left me cold because I wanted things to turn out differently for Sean And Anna. Regardless of that disappointment I hope you make sure to see this wonderfully filmed, beautifully scored work of modern art, and then return to this site to discuss your views!!
