A Brilliant Conflict

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

As a team of vampire hunters tries to find the hideout of a deadly clan, a member joins forces with a kidnapped victim's brother to rescue him from their clutches before he's turned into one of them in order to lead them to a sacred talisman their leader desires.Frankly, this one should've been far better than it was, but instead is reduced to a humongous pile of plot confusion and far too much time spent on story lines that have either nothing to do with the main plot or are featured for no reason other than to build up the cast of genre veterans. That seems to be the main problem here, as far too often we have to sit through something that makes no sense as to it's inclusion only because of who's playing the character that finally clues you in to it's inclusion. There's some good gore in here, though, with the deaths being inflicted coming off as pretty gruesome and the action scenes are far more entertaining than they should be, with stand-outs including a frenetic shootout through the main lair as well as the ambush on the hunter's hideout that results in the trapping of one of the main vampires and the subsequent torture for information that's far more brutal than it should be in such an effort, but it's a little confusing and far too much built-for-star-power than it should be.Rated R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

I find that the Chillers Cable Channel, where I viewed this movie, manages to find quality low budget movies. Unlike SyFy that just produces it's own cookie cutter crap rather than support real film makers Right off the bat you can tell this movie had almost 0$ budget. The film quality is just awful, most of the movie is in a stripped out building because they couldn't afford sets. Seriously they could have just blown half their money on a digital camera and it would have looked better.Brotherhood of Blood supports a decent cast of B actors you'll recognize from The Lost World, Cleopatra 2525, and Mutant X. It's a small movie that relies on a thoughtful script, rather than stunts and effects that are beyond it's means.I don't mean to be harsh. I enjoyed this movie, the character actors are well used. A good sign is that I found myself rewinding a few times because of the plot twists. It was interesting enough to want to follow the story.Ultimately this movie comes off as a low budget Usual Suspects, even pays tribute to it with the last camera shot.

I can see why "Brotherhood of Blood" would have difficulty being commercially successful. And that's too bad, because this is an excellent film. The "problem" leading to a commercial struggle is that the writers/directors created a very intelligent script that assumes the viewer does not need everything spelled out to them. This is a film that opens by placing us in the middle of a complex world, with a deep history, so that we have to pay attention and do a bit of detective work to get up to speed initially. The script is full of unexplained references to beliefs and traditions of Vampires and Vampire Hunters. It is densely packed with clever dialogue, subtle puns and other kinds of literary devices and references. This is not a light "popcorn" movie, and it is a slow burner. If you were not to fully pay attention and actively think about the film, you could easily become lost or confused. The performances are superb. the lead Carrie, the old vampire (Sid Haig), the captured vampire (Ken Foree), and the young Vampire all seem like real people with complex personalities and back stories. The ending of brotherhood of Blood cries out for a sequel, but not because the ending is at all incomplete, or because there was a monster who just wouldn't die. A 9 out of 10 from me.

Seriously, it seems that anyone with a bottle of catsup and a pair of wax fangs thinks he can make a vampire movie, which is why most of them are so bad. This movie was better than most in terms of plot and storytelling. A group of vampire hunters is seeking the brother of a rich CEO who was bitten in Romania. Meanwhile, the vampires themselves are hunting the same brother to prevent the resurrection of "Vlad Bossei" a super-vampire who lived in the 12th century. There are all sorts of twists, turns, double-takes, and some of them don't really make sense, but the movie is fun for what it is, and the actors actually look like they are trying.
