quarterwavevertical What's not to like about this movie?It has swash-buckling action. It has a dashing hero (played magnificently by Errol Flynn). It has a beautiful damsel (an early role for Olivia de Havilland) who eventually finds herself in distress and is then rescued by the aforementioned hero. It has some colourful villains (including a pirate delightfully played by Basil Rathbone). It has a story in which good wins, love is triumphant, and wrongs are righted. Add to that a stirring musical score by the great Erich Wolfgang Korngold and you have a movie that never fails to entertain and has robustly withstood the test of time.It's fun from beginning to end and I look forward to adding this movie to my own personal library.Let's hope that no studio gets the daft idea to re-make this cinematic gem. It's a strong candidate for the perfect movie and there's nothing in it that needs improvement.

I had the misfortune of seeing "Captain Blood" shortly after seeing another Michael Curtiz/Errol Flynn swashbuckler, "The Sea Hawk," and the former pales in comparison in almost every conceivable way."Captain Blood" is a much talkier picture, and it's just not as fun. There isn't the same sense of adventure, and the pacing is much slower. Olivia de Havilland looks lovely, and Basil Rathbone shows up at one point as a rival pirate and adds some energy (he was always a welcome presence), but I overall found myself having trouble staying engaged in this one."Captain Blood" was officially nominated for two Oscars in 1935: Best Picture (in a year that saw 12 nominees!) and Best Sound Recording. But it also scored three write-in nominations: Best Director (Curtiz), Best Screenplay (Casey Robinson), and Best Scoring (which under the rules at the time would have gone to studio music department head Leo Forbstein, not the film's composer, Erich Wolfgang Korngold). The Academy established a new rule forbidding write-in nominations the following year.Grade: B-

jacobs-greenwood This is my favorite pirate movie and the film that helped Errol Flynn make a name for himself. And, it's an earlier teaming of Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone and director Michael Curtiz than The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) too. The film was Oscar nominated for Best Picture, as was director Curtiz, its Screenplay (Casey Robinson earned his only Academy recognition for adapting the Rafael Sabatini novel), Sound and Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Score. Also see Guy Kibbee as one of Flynn's compatriots.Dr. Peter Blood (Flynn) is convicted of treason for treating an enemy of the king. He is sold into slavery where he meets, and is temporarily saved by a beautiful woman (de Havilland), the daughter of the man (Lionel Atwill) in control of the island where he is taken. But Blood leads the other slaves on an escape. They steal a boat, and become successful pirates with Blood as their captain. Of course, he must be pursued, and he must rescue de Havilland from Rathbone, and eventually the pirates become involved on the right side of the war between their former Britain and France.

But Blood soon escapes and, along with other slaves, he takes over a Spanish ship and becomes a pirate. Known now as Captain Blood, he is the most feared pirate on the high seas.Next to Robin Hood, this is my favorite Errol Flynn movie. Flynn's terrific and has a fantastic cast to back him up. Olivia de Havilland is the pretty love interest in this first of nine movies she would make with Errol. They always had wonderful chemistry. Basil Rathbone and Lionel Atwill play the villains. If that's not enough incentive to watch, how about a supporting cast that includes Guy Kibbee, Henry Stephenson, Donald Meek, Holmes Herbert, and Robert Barrat? Good direction from Michael Curtiz and fine score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Exceptional swashbuckler from Warner Bros. Great fun that keeps you glued to the screen from beginning to end.
