Synopsis

When mild-mannered Martin Harvey finds out that he has inherited a vintage yacht, he decides to take his family on a Caribbean vacation to retrieve the vessel. Upon arriving on a small island and realizing that the ship is in rough shape, Martin and his family end up with more than they bargained for as the roguish Captain Ron signs on to sail the boat to Miami. It doesn't take long before Ron's anything-goes antics get the Harveys into plenty of trouble.

TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Siflutter It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Sabah Hensley This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
Celia A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
KC Quinn It is beyond me how an excellent movie such as Captain Ron received such a low rating. Of course I never understand the ratings here...really great movies with low ratings and real stinkers with extremely high. At times I wonder if the stinkers are not just pumped up in score by friends. Who knows...but over the years I stopped reading reviews til after I viewed the movie. They just cannot be trusted.Good comedies are difficult to find nowadays. If you come across one watch it and enjoy...don't just dis it and toss it aside.Captain Ron has all the elements of a great comedy. Good comedic actors, good plot, and just enough foreboding when released it comes back and hits you much harder on the funny side than ever expected.Martin Short and Mary Kay Place played their parts well but, I have to admit, Kurt stole the show...it didn't even seem like he was acting...he was Captian Ron!!!
Geeky Randy Panned 1992 family-adventure about middle-class family man Martin unexpectedly inheriting a boat, and instead of paying a boat mover to sail it from the Caribbean to Miami to sell it, he takes his wife (Place) and children (Salisbury and Sisto) on a "spontaneous adventure" led by an incompetent captain-for-hire (Russell in the title role). Viewers may be getting too hung up on the fact that it is Russell in the funny role and Martin in the serious one, but the latter is excellent as a dorky yuppy whose patience is being chiseled away by the former's family-unfriendly antics. If you sit back and roll with it, it's like letting the wind carry the sails, with its wonderful score by Pike and beautiful filming locations (mainly shot in Puerto Rico).★★★ (out of four)
lukejmu This movie is so amazing. It basically has it all, Kurt Russell, Martin short, comedy, drama, pirates, boats, guns, fire, boobs, and fire-breathers. It doesn't get much better. The performance Russell gives in showing the resolve, determination, attention to detail and focus shown by the Harvies in their pursuit of a free lifestyle, truly shows a level of unwavering mental toughness that is very impressive and without a doubt lies at the heart of the film's appeal. Ron, is tough, brave and stubborn as he fights through every obstacle, setback and trial throughout the journey. If this movie were to be re-leased today it would look something like this. Electrified_Voltage I first decided to check out this comedy adventure when it came on TV one time last year. It had been out for fourteen years by then, but I had never heard of it before. It turned out to be one forgettable experience for me, but recently, I gave it another try, thinking that maybe it was one of those movies that gets better with a second viewing. However, I was wrong, as watching it a second time was just another forgettable experience. The Harveys are a family who live in Chicago, consisting of Martin and Katherine (the two parents), their teenage daughter Caroline, and younger son Benjamin. When they learn that they have inherited a yacht, they intend to sell it and make a lot of money. However, when they go to the island of Ste. Pomme de Terre, where their boat currently is, they discover that it is not in very good condition. They are to sail it from Ste. Pomme de Terre to Miami, where the man interested in buying it is to meet them and see the condition of the boat for himself. On the voyage, they are assisted by Captain Ron, an easy-going but uncouth captain, who is about to lead the Harveys through a series of mishaps! For me, "Captain Ron" did not succeed as a comedy. I did laugh and smile occasionally, but not usually. Comedian Martin Short has been a lot funnier than he is as Martin Harvey. As an adventure film, this movie also failed to please me, as I only found a bit of excitement. One good thing I can say about this comedy adventure is that Kurt Russell's performance as Captain Ron stands out, but this obviously doesn't save the entire film. Overall, this is pretty much an average film in both the comedy and the adventure genre in my opinion, and if you're interested in seeing it, you might want to see if you can somehow watch it for free (for example, on TV or from a library).
