Teddie Blake The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

Tweekums By the time the 'Carry On' series had got to this point all subtlety had been lost as had most of the regular cast. Only Kenneth Connor and Joan Simms appear here and the latter had a relatively small role. Connor plays Captain S. Melly who has just being given command of an anti-aircraft battery; he has a couple of problems however; it is a mixed squad whose personnel would rather be enjoying each others company than preparing to take on the Luftwaffe and they don't have a real gun. The film follows Melly and his Sergeant Major as they attempt to train the squad as well as trying to keep them out of each other's huts.I was expecting this to be much worse when I saw how few of the regular cast were present… that isn't to say it is good; it just isn't terrible either. Connor does a decent job as Melly and Windsor Davies is great as Sergeant-Major 'Tiger' Bloomer even if the character is to all intents and purposes the same one he played in 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' as he spends most of the time shouting and turning bright red. There are a few funny moments but many of the jokes are too puerile; thinking the aircraft name 'Fokker' is funny because it sounds like an obscenity is the sort of thing that would seem amusing to somebody in primary school but not to anybody much older. There were also a couple of topless scenes that seemed out of place in a Carry On film; the series was better when the humour was a little naughty without being blatantly smutty. I wouldn't recommend going out of ones way to watch this; if you want a good comedy set in war time Britain just watch an episode or two of 'Dad's Army'… they have far more laughs and actually feel as though they are set during war time.

w22nuschler I cannot understand why people hate this movie. At least there were a few positive reviews. This film takes place during the war in 1940. The four leads are wonderful. Kenneth Connor plays the Commanding Officer and Windsor Davies plays the very funny Sergeant Major. The two main recruits are played by Judy Geeson as Willing and Patrick Able as Able. They are also wonderful. I have seen Judy Geeson in Brannigan and Space:1999. I loved her in both. Patrick Mower also has a memorable part in a Space:1999 episode.This film basically has the C.O. coming to whip the recruits into shape. He is helped by the Sergeant Major. They play off each other well. The recruits work together to keep things the way they are and not let them have the upper hand. There is one topless scene where the women stand at attention and are inspected by the C.O. That scene was not needed. The Sergeant Major is funny in the film because he is always yelling in a funny way.I give this film an 8 out 10 because it's funny and the leads are so likable. Do yourself a favor and check this out and don't listen to all the negative reviews. I have seen the two films made after this, and this film is much better than both.

crossbow0106 Set in 1940 in England, this is a story about a particular military outfit made up of men and woman who were particularly inept, lazy and probably a bit oversexed. Sid James, who wasn't supposed to be here anyway, passed away before the film was done. He could have brought some life into this, he was a great comedian. This movie is very shrill, lots of yelling, lots of noise. Does the new general of this company whip these people into shape? Do you care? The jokes are very obvious here, and I was only semi-amused a few times. The movie seems labored, and that is not good for a Carry On film. I would only recommend this film for Carry On completists. Otherwise, there are other films in the series which are infinitely better (examples are Carry On Doctor, Carry On Abroad, Carry On-Don't Lose Your Head etc).

Jackson Booth-Millard The critics give this one star out of five, Carry On Abroad was a little sour, and this is worse. Most of the regular actors are out of it: Bernard Bresslaw (busy?), Charles Hawtrey (departed the series), Sid James (dead), Hattie Jacques (busy?), Kenneth Williams (busy) and Barbara Windsor (refused), so you're obviously going to be disappointed. The only regulars still there are Kenneth Connor, Joan Sims and Peter Butterworth. Anyway, basically it is World War II, and Captain S. Melly (Kenneth Connor) takes over as the new Commanding Officer at an experimental mixed sex air defence base. The soldiers should be preparing for attacks and stuff, but they are more interested in getting off with each other. Melly has plans to stop this and be a very hateful leader, making the soldiers rebel in whatever way they can think of. I might have giggled (not laughed) at the shouting of the Sergeant-Major, and a little innuendo, but that's it, the rest is complete crap, don't bother with it. Poor!
