BA_Harrison In Carry On Matron, the fourth film in the series to be set in a medical environment, Kenneth Cope plays reluctant crook Cyril Carter, who is convinced by his father Sid (Sid James) to sneak into Finisham maternity hospital disguised as a nurse as part of a patently daft plan to steal a consignment of valuable contraceptive pills.Let's be honest, only in a Carry On film could Kenneth Cope successfully fool anyone into thinking that he is a women, let alone have another man find him attractive, (Terry Scott, as randy physician Dr.Prodd repeatedly tries his luck with poor Cyril), but it is the sheer preposterous nature of the plot that makes this such fabulous fun—well, that and the non-stop innuendo, gratuitous nudity, silly slapstick, and winning turns from the regular cast members, with a special mention going to Kenneth Williams (as Sir Bernard Cutting), Hattie Jacques (as Matron) and Charles Hawtree (as Dr. Francis A. Goode), whose characters' interactions provide the film with many of its funniest moments (if you don't laugh when Sir Bernard discovers two of the crooks hiding in Matron's room, check your pulse… you might be dead!).7.5 out of 10, happily rounded up to 8 for Babs Windsor, Valerie Leon, Jackie Piper, Margaret Nolan, Madeline Smith, Gilly Grant (the obligatory 'nurse in bath'), and Lindsay Marsh (the topless nurse in pink knickers), all of whom deserve a hearty 'Phwoooarrr!'.

JoeytheBrit The Carry On films remind of a friend I once had as a kid. This friend was a great laugh until I reached the age of 13 or 14. He was a couple of years younger than me, and although he hadn't changed, he seemed to become, almost overnight, an annoying little twerp, and the jokes that once kept me entertained I suddenly found intensely childish and irritating. When I was a kid I loved the Carry On films, but now you could probably compile all the genuinely funny bits from the countless films into a one-hour TV special.To be fair, Carry On Matron probably isn't the best film with which to reacquaint oneself with the series after a gap of some thirty years, and I'm sure if I watched Spying or Screaming my opinion would be a lot less unforgiving. In this one, the cast of regulars simply seem to be going through the motions, and you get the impression that the writers struggled to write parts for all of them. Everything's disjointed, and Sid James seems to be in another film for much of the time. By now the series was winding down and its best years were behind it. British cinema screens were awash with home-made sex comedies featuring familiar actors which were prepared to go that little bit further in order to entice its primarily teen audience into the cinema, and the Carry On films started looking dated.This one has a typically daft plot involving Sid and his gang planning to rob Finishem maternity hospital of its supply of contraceptives. In order to do that, they need an inside man to get a plan of the hospital's layout, which is obviously the cue for one of their number (Kenneth Cope) to dress up as a nurse. Once in the hospital he finds himself sharing a room with busty Babs Windsor who wastes no time in stripping down to her underwear and asking him to undo her bra. Naturally, our hapless 'hero' makes a run for it. It's difficult to single out anyone as giving a better performance – everyone knows what's expected of them and duly obliges. There are a few funny one-liners ('By the way – you're mail,' says matron Hattie Jacques to Kenneth Williams, who mistakenly believes he is turning into a woman. 'Yes, I am!' Williams exclaims. 'And I can prove it, d'you hear? Prove it!'), but little else to get enthusiastic about.

ianlouisiana Although it's visiting mostly familiar territory,"Carry on Matron" manages to bring a certain degree of freshness to what might have been a weary rake - over of old hospital gags already well mined by the Carry On team. Somehow Mr Williams and Miss Jacques manage to imbue their expertly played dialogues with all the enthusiasm of an ingenue in her first West End role on a night when the producer is in.Even the most dire pun is polished with evident relish and delivered with aplomb and every appearance of spontaneity - their art skilfully hidden behind a facade of silliness. These two fine actors provide virtually all the enjoyment to be had from the movie.Mr Sid James is relatively subdued as the leader of the gang aiming to steal a consignment of contraceptive pills from the Finisham Maternity Hospital.Only whilst posing as "Dr Zhivago" does he have the opportunity to unleash his rather strange talents.Mr Kenneth Cope as his son makes a rather winsome nurse but is not bold enough to be comfortable in this style of comedy.Mr Bernard Bresslaw,on the other hand,has boldness enough for both of them - which is not necessarily a good thing. The received wisdom is that "Carry On" movies did not travel well into the era of Fiona Richmond,Robin Askwith and Mary Millington,and generally I agree with it.But "Carry on Matron" has a defiant innocence that appeals far more than the knowing soft porn that was soon to evolve as BBFC began to lose its grip - an event not universally welcomed.
