The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

The movie really just wants to entertain people.

It's slightly curious that Charlie Chan isn't actually in London all that much - most of the film's duration he actually spends at a country house! Still, this is an excellent mystery, given a nice glossy look and A feature production values. The house itself is impressively huge.Chan, of course, has just 65 hours to save an innocent man from hanging, a plot that's been done to death in detective mysteries, though in 1934 it was still relatively fresh. Chan, (Warner Oland) goes about his business with politeness and humour - he even smiles and gives a little chuckle when the door is closed in his face! Yet in investigating the crime we see the resourceful sharp as a pin man he really is.Warner Oland is wonderful in this role. I think this was his fifth Chan film (sadly 3 of the earlier 4 are lost) and he is well settled and humongously likable. Chan has to endure some subtle racism from several of the upper class members of the household, and some slightly more overt stuff from a few of the lower classes as well! As ever Chan rises above it all. The movie also has an early film appearance from Ray Milland, and of course E.E. Clive as a Lestrade-type inspector (he's even more thick!) A very entertaining and enjoyable movie. Haven't seen these movies in over twenty years. Roll on my viewing of the next Chan!

This is really quite engaging. A man has been convicted of murder in England and has used up his appeals. In three days he will be executed because of the heinous nature of the crime. His sister believes her brother has been unjustly accused, but motive and opportunity speak loudly. Chan finds himself dealing with the upper crust, treated with disdain and indifference. One maid sees him as the angel of death. Chan, who would like to go back to Hawaii, his home, stays because he believe in the man's innocence. The big name actor who appears in this film is "Raymond" Milland. Charlie must wade through bigotry and resistance to accomplish what he can. The plot is interesting and the suspects present obstacles that are fun.

Charlie Chan in London (1934) *** (out of 4) Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) is about to leave London and return home when Pamela Gray (Drue Leyton) asks him to take a look at a case involving her brother who is sitting on death row and about to be hung in three days. Chan agrees to take the case when he stumbles on a bit of evidence that puts his own life at risk.CHARLIE CHAN IN London is yet another winner in the series from Fox who were clearly treating this series with the highest bit of respects and especially in regards to writers. This film certainly isn't a masterpiece but there are enough interesting plot points to keep the viewer interested and there's no doubt that we're also given a great supporting cast of characters to help Oland along.The best thing in the film is its screenplay, which has a pretty interesting mystery that keeps you guessing throughout. As you'd expect, there are several suspects that end up popping up but the film manages to make you guess one person one second and then another the next. The mystery really plays itself out in a very good manor and manages to make for a fun ride. Another plus is that director Eugene Forde helps keep the film moving at a very fast pace without any slow spots or moments where you just slip off not caring about what's going on.The performances are another major plus with Oland perfect as usual in the role of Chan. Everything from his line delivery to the way he walks is just perfectly nailed and there's never a single second where you believe you're watching an actor in a role. The supporting cast is also very good with strong support from Leyton as well as Alan Mowbray, Douglas Walton and Ray Milland. E.E. Clive plays a dimwitted Detective and the comedy is a tad bit too forced.CHARLIE CHAN IN London is the second earliest surviving Oland-Chan film and there's no doubt that it's a winner. While not quite as good as THE BLACK CAMEL, there's no question that it contained one of the best screenplays.

In London, a woman enlists the help of Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) to prove the innocence of her brother, who is scheduled to be executed in three days. Charlie races against the clock to figure out who the real murderer is and expose them. Of all the detective film series of the '30s & '40s, Charlie Chan is my favorite. I particularly enjoy the Warner Oland Chan films. He was perfect in the role. Some nice support here from Alan Mowbray, Mona Barrie, and a young Ray Milland. None of Charlie's sons appear in this one. Instead, comic relief comes from E.E. Clive as a silly detective who takes copious notes and constantly refers to Charlie as "Mr. Chang." Fun detective story featuring one of filmdom's greatest detectives. You can't go wrong with Charlie Chan!
