Near death, a serial killer recites a spell, transferring his soul into a doll. A widowed mother gives the doll to her son as a gift. On his own, the doll, Chucky, ends up killing several people. The police don't believe their story: it was Chucky who keeps killing these people! The serial killer eventually decides he wants to transfer his soul into Andy's body. Now he must be stopped! Find out how they kill him once and for all. Oh, and Chucky has the strength of a man even though he is a child's doll.

Seeing as it's October I decided to go back and watch some of my favourite horror villains back in their heyday . I have loved the character of Chucky for a long time but having watched the latest in the child's play/ Chucky saga (cult of Chucky ) I realised that I have seen 6 of the 7 films ( I always believed I had seen child's play before ) so I decided to watch it today and I am still a fan especially of brad douriff's portrayal of Chucky and the way he carries himself through the animatronic doll . But having lived in a mostly hd era I couldn't help but get carried away with picking out when you can clearly see an actor dressed as the titular doll through many of the scenes . I am Not saying it ruins the movie, as I am no way a critic or an expert I am merely a fan . So I decided to let that all slide and enjoy the movie which i did a lot! . For a genre that was full at the time with masked killers , ghosts and zombies child's play shows that with the right aesthetic and pacing a killer doll can actually be a fun and intriguing concept . As I said earlier brad douriff was excellent as always . Alex Vincent was a convincing foil for the titular doll as he was trying tell and show his mother and the detective that it was in fact Chucky who killed the babysitter and Eddie . While they were convinced that Andy was just using the doll as a scapegoat. But boy when Andes mother finally realises she has been wrong this whole time and when Chucky reveals himself to her I actually jumped . All in all this was a good 80's horror movie but it could of been helped by better casting of the adults and more convincing line readings . But all that was just a sign of the times as this moves deserves and rightfully takes its place in horror history .

In terms of the entire "killer doll / toy / dummy" sub genre, "Child's Play" has ensured its iconic status. This is thanks to a solid cast, a genuine feel for suspense thanks to director / co-writer Tom Holland, some excellent wintry atmosphere and location shooting in Chicago, an extremely memorable villain, and truly impressive special effects work. Until the sequel "Curse of Chucky" came along a few years ago, and took the series back to its roots, this was the only entry that could legitimately claim to be creepy - if not outright scary. An ultra-psychotic serial killer / thief named Charles Lee Ray (character actor extraordinaire Brad Dourif) is gunned down by a detective named Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon, one of the stars of Hollands' previous horror favorite, "Fright Night") inside a toy store. However, "Chucky" is NOT ready to die, and succeeds at transferring his soul inside a "Good Guy" doll. In this form, he continues to terrorize people, including Karen Barclay (lovely Catherine Hicks), the single mother who happens to buy that same doll for her son Andy's (adorable Alex Vincent) birthday.Although Hicks and Sarandon are very good, the true stars of "Child's Play" have to be Dourif and Chucky effects creator Kevin Yagher. (Buffs will already be aware that Hicks and Yagher became a couple after working together here.) Dourif, who's always been a master at playing guys who range from being eccentric to being out and out looney, is a real force of nature, even when it's just his voice you hear. Chucky has become one of the defining roles of his career, and he's voiced the character ever since. Co-starring are Dinah Manoff ('Empty Nest', "Grease") as the unfortunate friend / babysitter, Tommy Swerdlow ("Howard the Duck") as Mikes' colleague, Jack Colvin ('The Incredible Hulk') as a psychiatrist, Raymond Oliver ("Forbidden World") as a voodoo master, and Neil Giuntoli ("Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Part II") as a criminal lowlife. To the credit of the writers (including original Chucky creator Don Mancini) and Holland, they keep things as ambiguous as they can for a while, casting some doubt as to whether the doll is actually running around or if it's Andy. But things kick into a much higher gear once we get to see Chucky in action, and he's damn entertaining to watch. This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the theme that plays during the closing credits. That's straight up one of the creepiest, most haunting things that this viewer has ever heard.Followed by six sequels (the latest, "Cult of Chucky", is currently in production).Eight out of 10.

This was good.First, the pros,I liked the characters, they felt real and were decently acted.I also like the fact that this movie was a mystery type thing, and I also like the setting,it's very refreshing to see a slasher movie take place in a big city.I also thought that the kills were great,I appreciate that they're not just for the body count, their part of the story and they're very suspenseful.Last pro,Brad Dourif,he is great as Chucky, very creepy and funny. Now,the cons,I think that the mystery could've been handled a bit better, the characters should've been more developed, and the acting at times was way too over the top.Child's Play is a good horror movie that suffers from some bad writing.
