Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, Charles Rocket, Michael McKean and Julie Brown star in this 1989 sci-fi comedy. Davis (Beetlejuice) plays Valerie, a California manicurist who is in a troubled relationship. Soon, 3 colorful, furry aliens head to Earth and land in her swimming pool. She's scared at first, but befriends them and helps them blend in. Goldblum (The Fly) plays Mac, the leader of the trio who falls for her, Carrey (The Mask) plays Wiploc, Wayans (The Last Boy Scout) plays Zeebo, the late, Rocket (Dumb & Dumber) plays Valerie's cheating fiancée, Ted who is a doctor, McKean (This is Spinal Tap) plays hippie, Woody and Brown (Clueless) plays Valerie's friend, Candy. This is a bizarre film that pokes fun of and pays tribute to 50's sci-fi & B movies. It also provides some cheesy, yet amusing musical sequences provided by Miss Brown, Davis & Goldblum have good chemistry and had previously worked together in "The Fly" & "Transylvania 6-5000." Carrey and Wayans also worked together on TV's "In Living Color." I'd give this a view at least once.

This here is a fairly original concept for a comedy, a film that featured some who would become comedic stars in the later years such as Wayans or Jim Carrey. I think the people rating it this low (as seen on the IMDb user average) really are missing the point and went into this with the wrong mindset. Yes the film is basic in plot and absolutely could've used more material and feels thin at about the 2/3 of it, but the ending is genuinely cute however predictable and the gags really are very, very funny at times. At least a good 4 or 5 scenes are just hilarious in either concept or execution. Also, something of a very caricature-laden social commentary on the L.A. scene but more globally the sort of mindless drone society of the late 80's in this one; some characters being downright stereotypes which is quite funny - while the musical aspect is not the most accomplished but really quite interesting in the environment-interacting bits, very creative stuff.Finally, this was co-written by a woman, and it comes as no surprise as it shows a lot in the storyline. This really is more of a fan-favorite than a truly standout comedy obviously, but even the unbiased viewer can find lots to giggle at, and however frivolous it still holds an authentic, cozy feel to it. A shame though, in the sense this had potential for a lot more with the alien love story concept or the opportunity to expose our human trends through the scope of extraterrestrials... 6.5/10.

I didn't think much of this film when I first saw it but since then I have watched it a number of times and, in the words of Beetlejuice, "it keeps getting funnier every single time!" I work at a busy video store and I'll often put this film on when I'm working Saturday night. It's always popular with customers who enjoy watching it as they browse, comment on how young Jim Carrey looks, and ask "What on earth is this?" as they get to the checkout counter. That's because its such a great looking film. The vibrant color palette with its bright primaries and 80s rehash of 1950s aesthetics is inspired production design. The film really has aged incredibly well and looks better today than when it was first released. Were it released today it could easily take its place beside any of the recent musical comedies that have come out in the last ten years.
