Masterful Movie

a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

The film has genuine fun moments - with Marion's attempt to show 'striking resemblance' of Edgar in a couple of photos, the way music plays in the backdrop when the family is entreated to a turkey meal for Thanksgiving. The contrasts between stiff British and boisterous American approach to life has not been overdone.A movie certainly worth a watch twice, and once for sure.

I have to say that my only exposure to Sir Noel Coward's work was seeing the London production of "Hay Fever" with Dame Judi Dench and an all star cast in it's final performance. This film is based on a play by Coward. He enjoys mocking the hypocrisies of the upper class and aristocracy. In this film version, a wild American widow Larita marries into an uptight old British family. Colin Firth and Dame Kristen Scott Thomas plays the in-laws. Jessica Biel plays Larita. The film has some comedic and dramatic moments. Her in-laws are bewildered and amused by her. The film is done on location. The cast are first rate. The storyline especially Coward's plays are dated by today's standards.

"Easy Virtue" is one of those films that could have been so good, but something failed along the way. However, unlike with most such cases, this time it's the script that was a let down.Visually, it was perfect. Great shots, colors, editing, sets... It was pure eye candy. If I could ever go back in the 1930s Britain, that is the life I'd choose. Acting - solid in the given conditions. A respectable cast did a fair job. Still, with all the famous faces, expensive scenery and fancy post production, "Easy Virtue" misses something. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but the overall impression is that the script simply didn't deliver. During the entire movie You expect something to happen, and You more or less know what should happen, but that something just doesn't seem to arrive.I don't know... I guess it's worth watching with the sound off (except for the music maybe). The visuals are astounding, but that's pretty much it.

This is really bad. Not only because of some idiotic character actions, but because we're supposed to sympathise with a woman while given no reason to do so.I saw an Easy virtue film made in 1928 (by Hitchcock nonetheless) and it was good. Not brilliant, but moving. The sad story of a divorced woman who hasn't really done anything wrong but got caught in a bad situation and whose past catches up with her.In the 2008 film we also have a woman who's apparently persecuted by her in-laws. But this Larita is no poor innocent victim of an unwanted scandal. We see this at the end when she admits to having indeed killed her former husband (a euthanasia case). Before this we are only treated to her being all carefree and with no consideration for the family's needs. And we are expected to applaud such a person? Her husband is obviously better off without. Cerise sur le gateau, the husband's father runs away with her after an indecent dancing scene. It's all very "emancipated".Spare yourself and do not watch this progressive garbage. I only give it 2 stars for the acting, it's solid enough and I was pleasantly surprised by Jessica Biel.
