The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

Im a massive fan of 80s movies, i love everything 80s. But this movie has aged and is almost un watchable once the boys arrive on the ship. Everything up until then is quite good, the plot is a typical 80s adventure, but once they actually meet the aliens it ruins the film for me and is just far too silly and unrealistic to watch in this day and age. Its a shame because it could have been up there with the monster squad, the goonies and stand by me, but unfortunately it just went a little it too far with the aliens and silly humour and for me thats why it makes it un appealing in this time

There are many reasons a person could watch this movie. Young hackers, young astronauts, young sci-fi students, people who dive into their dreams... are we alone?? In this movie, the answer is there for all of them. It is an awesome movie, one of the great movies that touches the dreamer. For me, it was the ability of one of the kids in particular that made this a must watch from when I was a kid, even until now with my own children I had them watch it. The computer aspect of one of them making a logic / motherboard we will say out of the diagrams of one of the other kids dreams. It was awesome! The sphere that was created from a board hooked to a computer then was given x,y coordinates and destination information was just AWESEME!!! A must see for any and all ages. Hang on tight while you go on an adventure to... well... I wont spoil it for you. Great Movie!

This time around Mock Films Blog will be reviewing a film that I hadn't seen growing up but always heard good things. The movie in question being the young adult Sci-Fi adventure Explorers (1985) directed by the ever entertaining Joe Dante. When three kids played by Ethan Hawk, River Phoenix (in their first on screen roles), and Bobby Fite have similar (Tron-like) dreams, they unlock the blueprint for a device which can create a bubble that can travel through space without the feeling of inertia. (Yeah, I know right?) A kid's flick with high brow concepts. How have I gone so long without watching this movie?Ten minutes in and it had me. I'll say it, I'm a complete ass for not enjoying this when I was young. It holds up (Kinda. I'll get to that.). This gem would have embedded itself into my nostalgia collection, much like Gremlins (1984) (another Joe Dante classic, which also stars the director's favorite reoccurring actor, the wonderful Dick Miller), The Goonies (1985) (which scared the crap out of me at the the age of six), and The NeverEnding Story (1985) (crazy Germans at their best). Are we seeing a pattern here with the years of release. This movie goes into that pantheon of films that are just enough on the fringes of weird that it works. A staple of film in that era—

I'm a big fan of Joe Dante's oeuvre, although I'm more disposed towards his adult audience films (like PIRANHA and THE HOWLING) over his out-and-out kid's flicks. Saying that, EXPLORERS is still a decent kid's movie that manages to successfully capture that magical feel of danger and exploration of the best genre films. In many ways it's similar in feel to THE GOONIES, made on a lower budget perhaps but without the cloying sentimentality that Spielberg brought to GOONIES.There's plenty to like in EXPLORERS, not least the spirit of inventiveness and invention that allows the kids to build their own spaceship using trash and one of the most dated computers you'll see on screen (128k of memory? Wow!). Dante did well to cast Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix in the main roles, as both show off the talent that would make them successful later on in their careers. Plus there's a decent-sized cameo from Dick Miller and James Cromwell cast against type as a mad inventor.Although I never watched this film all the way through as a kid, I remember being put off by what I saw of the rubbery aliens. Even now they disappoint, although I understand that they're included as a sort of satire of American TV and culture, but they take the film towards GREMLINS territory rather than a kid's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Sadly, it's the budget deficit that prevents EXPLORERS from being a true genre classic, but you can still rely on Dante to deliver an entertaining movie for the most part.
