Matcollis This Movie Can Only Be Described With One Word.
CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Payno I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Mihai Toma In a dark place, where evil rules and every evil scientist has his own loyal hunchback servant (all called Igor), Igor, the main character is a bit different. He's a brilliant inventor, secretly working on numerous inventions which one day, hopefully, will make him famous. His big break comes out of nowhere, when his master is killed during a failed experiment. He decides to try to make what no evil scientist has done before: create life! That's where Eva comes is. Igor's lovely creation, opposite to what he wanted to achieve (an evil monster), is going to change his perspective on good and evil irreversibly. It's an interesting idea, although a bit simplistic, which unfortunately doesn't evolve in complexity during the film. It ends as easy as it started, with a very expected happy ending, no fuss and no tension whatsoever. It lacked intensity, it lacked drama, it lacked something very important, soul. Its animations aren't very good either. Although having a different way of creating its characters attracted my attention, its voice acting was horrible and some of the visual effects which were meant to impress, were far from something great.I tried to like it, with its ups and downs but it didn't work. Another average movie which will not be remembered soon, at least not by me.
Matt_Layden ...but the film fails to deliver on it's actually interesting premise. Igor is the sidekick to an evil scientist, we always get the evil scientist story, but never the story of the sidekick. This is where this film comes in. Igor, even though he is a sidekick, wants to be an evil scientist himself. Insert some humour that most kids won't get and some dark material that will scare them away, then you are left with an animated film that seemed to have lost it's target audience. It's also completely obvious they are trying to target the Tim Burton crowd as well, but it feels really third rate in terms of anything in that department. Igor is voiced by John Cusack, interesting choice. My problems with some animated films these days is that we no longer have voice actors in the lead roles, who are trained in this sort of thing, but any actor who is looking for a paycheck to just sit behind a microphone and speak the words from the script out loud. I found that Cusack is at fault here, despite everyone else in the film actually doing a decent job. The animation is nothing special. If looked at in comparison to other films, it looks very basic and that it belonged to the year 1998, not 2008. The dark and brooding atmosphere is not brooding enough, nor is it childish enough. It feels very boring and bland. Almost as if no effort was put into it. The writing is very bad and the script is below par. For a film that could have been filled with some funny jokes about the clichéd parts of this genre, it had none that made me laugh. The supporting characters are good, for adults, but not children. I think some kids might be scared that there is a suicidal bunny....even more scared when they find out it is voiced by Steve Buscemi. With so many good animated films out there, it's easy to close your eyes and blindly pick one up off the shelf that is better than Igor. It falls in the category of completely forgettable, with films like Valiant, Space Chimps, Fly Me To The Moon and others I can't even remember....because they are forgettable. I'm sure there are people who had no intention of seeing this. Consider this review as confirmation to those who were maybe a little interested, that you should just skip it.
Mr. Neutron I expected Igor to be terrible, but it turned out to be a pretty enjoyable film. It's the kind of thing you don't mind watching with your kids a few times. It doesn't break any ground as an animated film, but what it does, it does pretty well. Igor's sidekicks are highlights of the movie; both Scamp and Brain are constantly hilarious. Though I can definitely see why it bombed in theaters. Family audiences might dislike Igor for its black humor, but it's a light kind of black humor - harmless and fun. Nightmare Before Christmas fans might hate it for its visual style, which is at times a complete rip-off of NMBC or Corpse Bride. This is most apparent in supporting characters: the mayor of Malaria resembles the mayor of Halloweentown, Dr. Glickenstein resembles Dr. Finkelstein... the resemblances are uncanny. As for goths, they'll absolutely detest the ending! I detest the ending as well, especially the song they close the movie with. Speaking of music, they use 30s-50s vocal jazz tunes to great effect throughout the film, heightening certain moments.
dremond82 i was so disappointed with this movie that i registered with IMDb just to post my displeasure with it. my wife and i picked it up at the redbox for a Sunday afternoon laugh with the six-year-old. as fans of tim burton type films, we were expecting a witty and enjoyable experience. i love comedy films of all colors, but this movie did not provoke so much as one smile. the puns were extremely predictable and lame, and many times very inappropriate. we were horrified to have our child watch a movie that was marketed and rated as a children's movie that contained such vulgar and dark content. for the 30 minutes that we watched, we were bombarded with nothing but verbal/physical abuse towards the characters, along with repeated attempts at trying to make suicide a humorous subject. when we got to a part where the main character is telling another that they need to teach them how to "murder" people, we had enough and turned it off. if your child is not already in their teens, i strongly suggest refraining from watching this movie with them, regardless of its PG rating. however, even if i had watched this movie alone i would have still turned it off because of its complete lack of depth and humor. two thumbs down for this misleading movie.
