Bessie Smyth Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.

BA_Harrison Up until today I had only seen two Serbian films*, The Life and Death of a Porno Gang and A Serbian Film, both of which are very 'extreme' but also very good. Killer Mermaid (AKA Nymph) is a far more traditional horror, but nowhere near as impressive. The film features the criminally under-used cannibalistic siren of myth and legend for its monster, but fails to do the scaly terror justice, with a predictable plot, stock characters, poor acting, and weak special effects.Set in Montenegro, the film follows a group of friends who ignore the advice of a strange old man (played by Euro-cinema legend Franco Nero) and pay a visit to a small, supposedly deserted island fort, once used as a concentration camp by the Nazis. There they happen upon another strange old man who has been killing people and feeding them to a man-eating mermaid who lives down a well. With their inflatable dinghy sabotaged, the group must avoid the hook-wielding killer and the deadly fish-woman while trying to find a way off the island.Director Milan Todorovic delivers a fine looking film, with some nice cinematography (including some great aerial drone footage), good use of his location, and plenty of shots of his attractive female cast members in skimpy clothing. His handling of the story, however, leaves much to be desired, with too much padding and repetitive action frequently resulting in tedium. The film also fails to deliver on the gore front, with only a grisly beheading worthy of mention (the head removed with a length of spinal column attached).The final act, in which the surviving members square off against the siren is drawn out and unexciting.Based on this film, I think the Serbians should stick to the extreme stuff: they're better at it.*I tell a lie: I've just realised that I've also seen Zone of the Dead, another film by Todorovic, but had forgotten all about it because, according to my own review, it's crap.

FlashCallahan Two American girls on vacation visit an old friend in Montenegro.While there, they decide to venture to an abandoned military fortress located on a remote island.During their time on the fortress they discover that someone else is on the island with them and he will stop at nothing to protect it's secrets.There is a something hidden beneath the island and it's not Aerial....Just what the world wanted, a hybrid of IKWYDLS mixed with the myth of the mermaid. But if your looking for lots of killer mermaid action like the cover suggests, skip to the last ten minutes, and then prepare to be disappointed.If you are looking for a film featuring deplorable characters where the males are seduced by song, and two old men hold a grudge for each other, whilst being chased around an old building, this is for you.Never has a film been more deceptive with it's actual plot than this. We get a few kills with a harpoon type weapon, Django in a fisherman's cloak warning the group in the best Scooby Doo reference i've seen since Wayne's World.It's a pretty tepid affair, the acting is below par, and other than Nero actually making an effort with the terrible script, there really is nothing worth mentioning.Unless you really like to be deceived.

Liam Blackburn As soon as they said the island was called Mamula I said that should have been the title of the movie. In fact, it was the original title, they should've left it. Instead they clearly thought it would be too Euro-sounding so they called it Nymph. Nymph is such a boring title that must have been used already a hundred times. Anyway, this movie is hilarious lol. The best character is the ominous old fisherman who has a great monologue detailing the history of the evil island. This movie is pure jokes, I'm sure they were having a laugh along with me. The abundance of massive rolling screenshots give the movie an epic feeling. As the movie progresses, you start to feel like you're slowly descending deeper and deeper into a hellish abyss of evil! It showcases the beauty of the southern European peninsulas. When you think of Yugoslavia, you never think of pristine waters and little harbour villages. This is a true horror movie in classic horror style. Good job.

gradyharp This little film from Serbia directed by Milan Todorovic is based on a story by Marko Backovic and transformed into a screenplay by Barry Keating and Milan Konjevic. It will satisfy the current voracious appetite for horror stories that serve substantial amounts of gore to audiences who love that sort of thing. With an unknown cast the director relies on the presence of Franco Nero to bring a bit of credibility to an otherwise incredulous story.Two American girls travel to Montenegro on vacation to visit an old friend, playboy Alex who unbeknownst to the girls is now engaged. They decide to venture to Mamula, a former prison island and Nazi concentration camp that houses a horrendous evil. During their exploration of the fortress they discover that they are not alone: a sinister fisherman named Niko (Franco Nero) is seen disposing of human remains in a well and everyone realizes they are in mortal danger. Someone else is on the island with them and he will stop at nothing to protect it's secrets. There is a darkness hidden beneath the island and the terror has just begun – the killer mermaid.As if there weren't enough of this type of tale on television for free they continue to light up the marquee. As long as there is an audience there will be more. In Serbian and English with subtitles. Grady Harp, September 14
