This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama

This was a nice surprise, and an attempt at a different angle on the werewolf theme. The film's plot has flaws but it's well enough done, and Nick Damici is very good in the role as a blind Vietnam veteran. The werewolf effects could be better but are acceptable. Film is a little similar to " Silver Bullet" but better in my opinion.Overall, it's a good film that holds the attention.

A blind war veteran moves to a retirement community. He soon he realises that the area is plagued by werewolf attacks.Along with the Spanish comedy-horror Attack of the Werewolves (2011), Late Phases is among the best werewolf movies of the past few years for me. It benefits in a large part from having an interesting protagonist very well played by Nick Damici. He is a well-developed character whose spiky nature is used as an effective inroad for the audience quickly getting to know the community where the action takes place. His blindness also adds an additional angle, where he is simultaneously more vulnerable to the physical dangers but is more attune to what is going on under the surface. This latter element is typified by a mystery thread to the plot which is quite common in werewolf films whereby we try to find out who in the cast is the lycanthrope. The film benefited also from having a retro feel to it. I was almost put to mind of the kind of thing John Carpenter might have made back in the 80's if he had directed a werewolf movie. The music certainly harked back to that era with its moody synth heavy sounds being a very effective mood setter. Quite a few people seem to have a problem with the werewolf make-up in this one but I must say that I disagree. Pleasingly the film-makers opted to go for costumes and physical effects as opposed to cheap CGI and the result – to me at least – was quite organic looking monsters. There was one transformation scene, and while it didn't bring anything new to the table exactly, it was executed very well in my opinion. My favourite individual moment, however, was the scene where a werewolf leaps into the air and crashes down on a car windshield. It was an unusual and menacing moment which really stayed in the memory. All things considered, I have to put this down as a fine effort. With strong acting, a decent script, some good atmosphere and a few memorable werewolf scenes, I think this can definitely be considered a superior effort in its respective sub-genre.

When I first saw the review score and read some of the reviews I was put off, but now I'm glad I made my own decision on this. The film sets up the premise quickly but then takes a long time setup the final scene. This is achieved by using the mythical one month full moon trope.I found the characters to be well done, and unsettling realistic. Many may have found they were looking at themselves when seeing this film. From the hypocritical American Christians who superficially great people then ostracise them when it suits them to the protagonist with his grumpy old man angry at everyone persona. It was refreshing not to have perfect main characters but actually flawed human beings portrayed, shock horror! While the police are often portrayed as bumbling or clueless, here they were more disinterested than incompetent, but equally entertaining.Don't expect a schlock horror, while the effects aren't up to much, it's not about creating fear through special effects, arguably the laziest method available today, but the use of a slow build up of tension based around the one month time restriction. The inclusion of a blind main character was interesting. not relying on the old cliché that other senses become more acute, simply that he has to rely on them more, and we see him pains takingly working out distances around the house to make him more mobile and aware of his surroundings. All in all, I would recommend this film, to those who like their horror to be a bit outside the box. Certantly not for the typical nudity and gore aficionados. While others have stated this film has "ripped off" better movies, I believe it has incorporated elements in a far more believable way. While Silver Bullet was clearly best appreciated as a comedy rather than a horror, Last Phase is more of a suspense who dun-nit.

This Werewolf Movie Can Not Run in the Same Pack as American Werewolf in London (1981), Ginger Snaps (2000), or Dog Soldiers (2002), but it Does Owe its Pedigree to These More Memorable Films. It has a Transformation Scene Similar to American, the Snappy Humor of Ginger, and the Tall Lycanthropes of Dog. Still, This Low-Budget Winner is Not Without its Charm. Nick Damici's Completely Engaging Blind Senior Citizen and Some Other Good Performances Help the Mediocre Costuming of the Wolves Disappointment Rise to an Above Average and Respectable Genre Inclusion. Most of the Action is in the First and Third Acts and Deliver Enough Gore and Suspense to Impress, but it is the Different and Surprising Act Two, with its Impressive Script and Dialog About an Old Folks Gated Community Giving the Film its Special Status as an Imaginative and Entertaining Horror.
