Intcatinfo A Masterpiece!
Maidexpl Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Janis One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
agapece Add this movie to the list of inaccurate tellings of the life of Jesus. The life of Jesus is so interesting and faith building. No need to fabricate. Shame on you.
macnkids-84421 I GAVE this such a low rating because the subject matter is dear to my heart and this movie did a terrible job of presenting it. First Mary Magdalene was freed from seven demons, which I'm sure was one of the greatest reasons she followed Christ. There was little that followed scripture and despite the fact the "Yes, Jesus was human too", this movie was about some made up person, overcome by human frailties, not victorious over them. It's rather sad, because they could have done a beautiful job presenting the wonderful humanity of Christ and of Mary, but there was no reason to be unbiblical about it.
howard-kerr Well, not badly filmed, not with bad intentions, not bad actors (just not acting as well as they have done) but just so slow. Not moody, arty, make you think slow but boring, s.l.o.w. slow. Not a lot of dialogue (this works for some films but not this one), lots of lingering shots of place, people and their faces looking at the sky, each other and anything else.I loved Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator, but his JC wouldn't inspire anyone to follow him. A sort of mumbling, stumbling, scruffy JC with nice eyes though. And although biblically there is not a lot on Magdalene (as it happens I had been reading the gospels recently) and the film acknowledges its artistic licence, there is also not a lot in the film about her - mainly she is used as the observer for the JC story (and we all know the ending of that, so I don't think it counts as a plot spoiler).I am not sure of the target audience for this film - if you like biblical based adaptations then it is unlikely you will like this. If you don't then it is unlikely you would even watch it in the first place. On the positive, there at least seems to have been an attempt to recreate the historical setting and context - at least within the limits that commercial film making allows.Overall, a reasonable concept disappointingly executed. I can't recommend it.
edelq2 I'm only submitting this review to make the point that bothered me throughout the entire film. Jesus was 33yrs old at the time of his death, Joaquin Phoenix is ten years older so while I really admire him as an actor, he's totally miscast. He just comes across as a pseudo prophet here & I certainly didn't get a Christlike vibe from him at all. Jesus had an aura & a charisma & that's why people followed him. Joaquin is just too melancholy. He might have been better cast as John the Baptist. Rooney Mara was quite impressive as Mary Magdalene & she carried the whole film. Overall, a disappointing film & not as impactful as 'The Passion Of The Christ'.
