Synopsis

Royal Navy Captain Wentworth was haughtily turned down eight years ago as suitor of pompous baronet Sir Walter Elliot's daughter Anne, despite true love. Now he visits their former seaside country estate, rented by his brother-in-law, Admiral Croft, so the financially stressed baronet can afford a fashionable, cheaper residence in trendy Bath. The former lovers meet again on the estate, where they feel vibes again, but neither dares admit them until it seems too late.

2freensel I saw this movie before reading any reviews, and I thought it was very funny. I was very surprised to see the overwhelmingly negative reviews this film received from critics.
Red-125 Persuasion (2007 TV Movie) is a BBC production directed by Adrian Shergold. Sally Hawkins plays Anne Elliott. (Yes, the same actor that we saw ten years later in The Shape of Water.) Eight years before the novel begins, Anne was in love with a young British naval officer--Frederick Wentworth portrayed by Rupert Penry-Jones.At the time, Anne was persuaded to reject Wentworth, because her father is a baronet and he was a penniless young man. Now he has returned as Captain Wentworth. He's rich because of booty won in the Napoleonic Wars. However, Anne and her family have fallen on hard times, because her father insists that, as a noble, he has to spend his money freely. The question raised by Austen is whether Anne can regain Wentworth's love. This is a 90-minute movie, not a miniseries. Naturally, the plot is pared down to its basics. However, this version definitely worked for me.The lead actors were superb, the supporting cast was excellent, and production values were high. We saw the film on DVD. It would surely work better on the large screen, because of the beautiful British scenery and the glorious costumes. This film has an excellent IMDb rating of 7.6. If you're a Jane Austen fan, you've probably seen it already. If you haven't seen it, it's a must. Even if you don't particularly like Jane Austen, I still highly recommend this movie. It's a gem--don't miss it.
Talicja This version is far worse than the 90's version. I did not like the actress that played Anne in this version. Frederick was acceptable, although could be a little more weather-beaten, but Anne was not good. She seemed desperate with all the crying and running around. In the book, Anne is affected by his presence in the beginning and reminiscing the past and her decision, but she is not crying and longing for him! She actually wants to avoid him! She grows to feel the full extent of love again and is behaving as a lady ought to behave in these times. In the 2007 movie version Anne is deeply touched by the news that Fredrick is back from the sea and she even cries! Book's Anne is more composed. The fact that in the movie, they made her write a diary seems enough to show her feelings about Fredrick, crying wasn't necessary.
TheLittleSongbird I love Jane Austen's work, so I actually say with a heavy heart how disappointing this Persuasion was. Especially considering that 1995's Pride and Prejudice(in my opinion the ultimate Jane Austen adaptation), 1995's Sense and Sensibility, 2009's Emma and 1995's Persuasion have proved to be solid adaptations and succeed beautifully on their own merits. This adaptation of Persuasion isn't without redeeming values. The scenery and costumes are stunning and evocative complete with a melancholic atmosphere, the music is understated and beautiful and Anthony Head and Tobias Menzies are excellent and charismatic. On the other hand, the camera work is dizzying, the close-ups of Anne's face annoyed me after a while and it is annoying that when more than one person is talking not all of them are shown on screen. The adaptation is too short at two hours and consequently felt rushed so that we felt nothing for the characters or felt any passion coming out from the story. When it comes to the dialogue it was lacking the wit, poignancy and humour of the language of Austen, alternatively it didn't flow from line to line complete with some unintentionally funny moments such as Anne chasing Wentworth down the street, a somewhat modernised touch that stuck out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the adaptation.Head and Menzies aside, the rest of the performances are disappointing. I love Rupert Penry Jones, but apart from his handsome looks I found him dull and wooden. Sally Hawkins fares better, her interpretation is confident, though she is let down by bad direction and the decision to make Anne spoilt rather than resourceful. The Musgroves are sadly underused while Amanda Hale is awful as Mary, acting as though she was in a completely different period. In conclusion, disappointing and one of my least favourite Austen adaptations, and this is coming from somebody who didn't think much of 1999's Mansfield Park(not yet seen the 2007 one) either. 3/10 Bethany Cox
iloveUGA123 I ended up watching this version before I watched the 1995 BBC version, and I loved it! I enjoyed it so much that later I decided to finally watch the BBC version. I did enjoy it, and they were both very similar, it's just that the actors for this version were much, much more attractive than those on the 1995 version. I actually thought that the acting was better in this version, and I enjoyed it much more! I love what the movie is about, and how after they finally see each other 8 or 9 years later, you can still tell that they are head over heels for each other! You could tell that Captain Wentworth was still very hurt by Anne, but that he still loved her so much, and just didn't want to show that he did because he was so hurt by her. Captain Wentworth's plan did work, because Anne was very jealous and sad whenever he was around Henrietta or Louisa, and acted like he really liked them. It looked to me like she tried to make it seem as if she didn't really care at times, but you know that she really does. I would highly recommend watching this movie because I know that you would enjoy it if you like these kind of movies!
