Synopsis

The Pink Panther discovers a door with an hypnotic eye that takes him on a mind trip in a psychedelic book shop adorned by huge letters of the alphabet and managed by a short, pointy-nosed hippie. The shop contains a vending machine for lights (a cigarette lighter and Christmas tree lights) and books that "bleed" letters when damaged and are operated on as though critically injured.

Reviews

Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Keeley Coleman The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
Tayyab Torres Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
OllieSuave-007 This Pink Panther cartoon reminds me of the Disney short movie Donald in Mathemagical Land. The Pink Panther sees a door with an eye on it and is hypnotized. He is then taken into a topsy-turvy world full of books, lamps and signs, and he also runs into the the pointy-nosed man in the world as well.There are so funny gags in this one coupled with some ruffling with the pointy-nosed man. A cleverly done cartoon short that will make you suspend reality and enter the world of wacky imagination - almost like Wonderland stuff.Grade B+
Atreyu_II This isn't one of Pink Panther's most original and creative cartoons, but still has imagination enough. Yet, despite this, behind it there is a "classic" story of the Pink Panther and the "Little White Man". Pinky, of course, drives him crazy. The little white guy is known for his short temper.In this cartoon, Pinky visits the most unusual library ever. A strange library that looks like a cinema room with eccentric colors all around it. The librarian is, of course, the little white guy. Many things happen during the cartoon and these things are as funny as they are weird. Even the "Bizarre Book" has a word to say.Generally speaking, the cartoon is funny and okay, but I don't see it as one of Pink Panther's best. It is, however, one of the very few which we can hear the public's laughters, giving the idea that people are actually very close watching it - like in classic TV shows such as 'Family Ties' and 'Mr. Bean', for example.
ccthemovieman-1 So far, in watching some of these Pink Panther cartoons for the first time in 40 years I have yet to find a lemon.....until now. This is just not funny. What's really bad is there is a "laugh track" inserted in here, one of the most annoying things I've ever heard in a cartoon. Whose idea was that? Even the laugh track didn't have much to laugh about because the jokes simply were low-grade slapstick stuff.The story involves our hero going to the "Bizarre Book" club during the psychedelic days of the late '60s. It was fun to see some of the art work of the period, something I recall with fondness. My hopes for a nostalgic and funny cartoon, however, were dashed when very little happened.The only part I thought was clever was near the end with the Pink Panther and "the little white guy" get into a fight and brawl in front of several posters promoting "love," which was the popular "in" word of the psychedelic years. It was a jab at the hypocrisy of the naive hippies of the late '60s.
Robert Reynolds This short is a very effective and funny piece of work with some fascinating bits. I will be discussing details, so this is a spoiler warning: The Pink Panther comes upon a door with an eye and enters a realm of the odd and wonderful as a result. He comes upon a character who resembles "The Little White Guy" with a beard and dressed as a beatnik. The Pink Panther pulls down a book on "fire rituals" and hands it to the beatnik, who opens it with predictable results. Not being one to hold a grudge, the guy hands our hero a book on "The Love Lives of Panthers".Much of the rest of the cartoon revolves around the Pink Panther's attempts to read this book. He and the book fall through a hole, only to have the book "injured" severely enough to necessitate "surgery", which is done by the beatnik, with some assistance from our pink friend. A light bulb in a lamp burns out and the PP tries without success to replace it by using a machine marked "Lights", from which he gets almost every kind of light except a light bulb. He finally gets one by having an "idea" occur to him and taking the resulting light bulb from above his head! Off and on, various calamities befall the beatnik, courtesy of the star of the series, until the poor guy finally loses his temper and goes after him with a most unusual weapon. The ending of the short is a bit mixed, but the final shot is quite nice.This short is on the PInk Panther Classic Cartoon Collection and is most definitely worth checking out. Recommended.
