Synopsis

When mankind's savagery surpasses his fear of death, there is little hope for those who wish to live honest lives. Beneath a full moon, a young boy witnesses the murder of the bandits who had enslaved him, and is then christened with a new name by the man who rescued him. This boy is Shinta, now known as Kenshin Himura, and he is destined to become a swordsman. The softness of his heart does not befit the occupation, but his desire to protect the innocent is absolute.

Reviews

Brendon Jones It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Ariella Broughton It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Yazmin Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
Jenni Devyn Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.
netmonster4 I got about halfway through this and had to stop and switch over to the Japanese version. For me as a Rurouni Kenshin fan it was a huge disappointment. I have for many years been trying to get my hands on a complete series of the original Samurai X Rurouni Kenshin. Being an even bigger fan of that series I was expecting an awful lot. Unfortunately I was expecting a bit too much. Though I found the animation to be as beautiful as I remember Kenshin always being. So very eye pleasing and the music to be magnificent. I was dissatisfied with the English dialog and I think even the voice acting direction. I felt the same way about the series so I wasn't surprised. As much as I love the way Watsuki san tells a story I was disappointed by the fact that this was nothing but the last five episodes of the last season of Rurouni Kenshin with a couple of effects added. If I hadn't switched it over to the Japanese version I may have shut it off out of sheer disappointment and utter boredom. So to sum it up for Kenshin fans skip it go directly to Reflection. For movie fans go for it. It's a wonderful story.
salvamax133 With no doubt, we have here one of the masterworks of the anime. It is great, from the beginning to the end, in this film everything is carefully prepared: the direction and the screenplay a memorable, told with an unusual beauty in anime, delve much into the characters and gives a faithful description of the time, both the politics and the era, and the problems that face the innocent who dies day after day about the politic situation. Here we have one sentence of the film: "... you should not feel resentment even despair, one who has died will not return to life, you glad to be alive, ...". And of course, I can't forget the score, one of the best anime score I never listen, it helps you with its delicacy and tragic beauty to believe the tragedy who have to live with poor Shinta (later knows like Kenshin).
Mihai Cososatu I am a very experienced anime watcher and i must say that this one takes the gold by far. It simply engulfs every little aspect needed to become a cult classic and (why not?) a cinematographic masterpiece. From the beginning to the very end you are entrapped in the life of Battousai the Manslayer because it offers the viewer a very profound view of his start, his training, rising and eventual end as a professional killer. The very story is made so that it captures you and it doesn't let you go until the very end, even the music is absolutely perfect. The characters are very well done and you gradually feel them evolving around the plot line, you can't help falling in love with them.I recommend the Japanese original version because it is flawless and the subs are very good, but still Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal is a must see even if you are not a anime fan, the story will grip you so hard that even after it is over you will be staring right trough the credits still thinking about the extraordinary experience you have just been through.
nmtpaite What you would call me if i say there is no true love? ...A fake? a fool? i was watching the ninja scroll OVA before this ...halfway down the line i got bored with all the mechanical gadgets used extensively in the scroll . I felt disappointed , and decided to quit it.Then, i just thought .."lemme check this so called kenshin as well" (sarcastically). To my amazement i was glued to my seats after experimenting the first few minutes . what a score ! man o man. what a storyline..boy o boy! what a scenic..girl o girl! Believe me . i was so touched by the movie that i missed my dinner ! i wonder how people make such movies that can take your soul away..
