gohmifune Most descriptions look at The Code from the point of view of being a PTU sequel, or a scaled down version, instead of from the perspective of being the first of a series television movies which roughly equate to a serialized television show. If you don't look at this from that perspective, your enjoyment will be hampered. This is very much like the original movie, the characters and actors are here. There is a little more substance, a little more plot, but it is just as straight forward as the original, and as such, I won't spoil it here.Unlike the movie, this relies upon an ensemble of more than three characters, and all major characters are suitably defined. If you like any of the non-Johnnie To Milkyway movies, this is worth a try, even if you haven't seen the original PTU.
webmaster-3017 Tagline: An A disappointing TV-movie following up of PTU… Review by Neo: I find it bewildering that there are so many positive reviews of this movie. Sure, it processes the same cast as the far superior PTU, associated with Johnnie To somewhat and directed by a long time associate of Johnnie To. So what went wrong and the obvious nemesis is budget. With a budget this low, it is difficult to foresee anywhere near the quality of its predecessor, but the script is far too simple, the characters tries hard to convince and turns out rather blend and uninteresting. While it is great to see the likes of Simon Yam back in uniform and Lam Suet, now classic role as the cop who lost his gun through slipping a banana peel, any allusion to PTU is more embarrassing than imaginable. Technically, the movie feels like a TV series with a larger budget and slightly more polish production, but realistically, a movie is a movie and will always be judged as that. As a film, The Code is simply not good enough, not thrilling, not enough tension and not entertaining enough. The story goes like this; a bunch of PTU bashed up a drug dealer and got caught on a black and white blurry camera. The head of police department subsequently wants to these PTUs officers to pay the price and maintain their police force image. This result, in one close over after another as the PTU go chasing the drug dealer in a cat and mouse game of who wins first. As usual, everyone seems to have their own problems and somehow it is all interrelated towards the end. Not exactly an exciting synopsis, but I never say it was either.Simon Yam has great screen presence, but somehow this flick fails to capitalise on that and with its paper thin plot line, Yam is left with little to work with. While there are some scenes that are worthy, like the pure bashing in a karaoke room, underlying and reminding us of the brutal of Yam's character to achieve his means like in the original. Likewise, Maggie Siu is restricted to being in the background and in respective; I can hardly recall her presence. Luckily Lam Suet shows up with some much required comic relief, while not exactly pleasing, he is a welcome addition to the police squad. It is interesting to note, how easily Lam Suet is able to be funny, with some many flicks under his belt, this guy is probably one of the most underrated supporting actors in Hong Kong.Moving on, Tactical Unit: The Code, is not exactly what you would expect from the Milky Way tag or even Johnnie To for that matter. Even considering this is a movie made for TV purposes, it lacks the vital ingredients that made PTU so much superior – tension, execution, randomness, and the night time. The Code is noticeably mostly shot in day time, thus eliminating that special feeling/mood created by its predecessor. Rumours have it that the cinema release of Tactical Unit: The Comrades will live up to some of its lofty expectations, but for the mean time, The Code is hardly worthy of recommendation, let alone eagerly awaiting for the next instalment … (Neo 2009) I rate it 5/10www.thehkneo.com
Jason Lee Tactical Unit: The Code is produced by Johnny To, but directed by Law Wing Cheung. The movie starts off showing CCTV footage of three PTU officers in a back alley beating up a suspect, this footage is somehow obtained and submitted to the Police Board who then decide to start an internal investigation. So unlike PTU, where the plot took place entirely in one night in a race against time, in The Code the CAPO (Complaints Against Police Officers) officers are involved immediately in an investigation against the three cops. While the movie moves along at a fairly slow pace, dragging a bit at times, it is not entirely without merit. First of all I noticed that it's a bit more realistic than most cop movies. Different departments in the police force are not obligated to help each other out. Only if two people have a very good relationship and history would they grant a favor. Don't watch it if you're expecting stylish cinematography and intense gunfights. It's more of a story telling movie, so it's worth a rent if you like Simon Yam and Maggie Siu, as they both carry the movie most of the time. There are some decent twists. It's worth about a 6.5 but gets rounded up because the way the police officers assemble themselves and carry out orders, feels more like a documentary than an action movie, in terms of realism. I am not surprised if they had actually had an adviser from the Hong Kong Police to teach them the tactical side.
