Colibel Terrible acting, screenplay and direction.
Dotbankey A lot of fun.
SparkMore n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.
Roy Hart If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.
slightlymad22 Continuing my plan to watch every Johnny Depp movie in order, I come to The Astronauts Wife.If you have not seen it, the trailer gives a lot away. I didn't like this back in 1999, and have never revisited it, despite the dvd sitting in my collection from about 2003. I remember thinking it started off ok and then nose dived. I remember cringing at some of the dialogue a talented actor like Depp was saying!! I still didn't love it this time around, but I did think it was slightly better than I remembered. I can't fault Depp wanting to try something different each time he made a movie. In fact he should have been applauded for it. But here he is saying some of the most cliched and predictable dialogue, when his career thus far was anything but predictable. Likewise Charline Theron, she is given some awful lines to say. There is a scene where she is contemplating something, and she is talking to herself, and it's awful. There is some dodgy cgi and pacing issues too, but it wasn't all bad!! I did like the ending for one thing. I'm surprised I didn't remember it. Overall it is not all bad, but it misses the mark. The Astronauts Wife grossed $10 million dollars at the domestic box office failing to land a place on highest 100 grossing movie of the year list.
cadburypg This movie shouldn't have been made. I wonder if the writer and the director had any insight into what they were dealing with. Seems like they had an idea of a space and alien thriller which they made into a movie before it took any concrete shape. What started on a promising note becomes completely lost and shallow. Johnny Depp is a complete miscast as an astronaut. His expressions are too casual for an astronaut and he seems like he has no business being in a sci-fi movie. Even the actor cast as his fellow astronaut looks more like a mercenary. Depp did manage to look a bit creepy when the mystery is out. Theron fares better and is more convincing as a 2nd grade teacher and the chemistry between herself and Depp is pretty good. The plot is wanting in substance and lacks the impact of a haunting and creepy thriller about alien invasion. It fails to make the point of how chilling an alien invasion could be or how easily progress of science could be the doom of mankind. Hell, it even fails to cut a mark about how suddenly a young happily married couple's life is devastated. It was nothing more than a waste of time watching this movie.
SnoopyStyle Jillian (Charlize Theron) is a teacher and her husband Spencer Armacost (Johnny Depp) is an astronaut. Something goes wrong in his mission. He wakes up from his coma as a changed man. His fellow crewman Alex Streck has a disturbing episode and dies. Alex's wife commits suicide. Spencer leaves NASA for the private sector. Jillian feels lost and then she gets pregnant with twins. NASA Representative Sherman Reese (Joe Morton) comes to her with dire warnings. It's a really slow really long countdown. The drama has no bite. The movie has no tension. It turns into Rosemary's Baby midway through but this is nowhere near the classic horror. Johnny Depp doesn't have the menace. It's missing the paranoia. It's never in doubt about Spencer. The climax is less than climatic. It's a mostly weak film.
Missallen1234-196-350433 This movie had a lot of the common Hollywood formulas that would make any movie successful: a lot of sex, violence and death, attractive actors, even the magic Negro (Google it). However, it was lacking tremendously in certain areas. The acting was deplorable. I was shocked when I found out that Johnny Depp was commander Spencer. The storyline was awkward and the sex scenes were super awkward. The only positive thing I have to point out was the camera work. The soundtrack was strange too. They could have done so much better, but I could tell this was a relatively low budget film. Not anything I'll be looking at again.
