Truly Dreadful Film
Mischa Redfern
I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.

I have not read any other reviews yet because I did not want to have them bias my own thoughts on this one.First off, there are some things to this movie I really did enjoy. It does not use a ton of gore in order to get the label 'horror' for its category. That was nice to see. Sure, there's some, but it's not a gore fest. Between its pacing and story it makes more of an effort to set mood, which in turn helps what events you do see have more punch. That's a very nice trait to see! And this next part will come into play shortly, but I did really like the way they started the movie. I wouldn't call it inventive, but it sure worked! But, having given those praises, I confess it did not hold my attention too well. The biggest detractor I can come up with is...for some of the situations we see, who in the world gets up in the middle of the night with a sibling screaming their head off in horror, and the first thing the other sibling apparently thinks to do is grab their video camera before they run down the hall to see what in the world is going on? Because the perspective you see most of this movie from is someone with a portable video camera and they're recording all this. (ala Blair Witch/found footage)Early in the movie it works very well, because the setting makes it believable. I think the makers are banking on you getting involved enough in it to dismiss surrounding circumstances...OK I'm nit- picking, but again I guess I did not get that absorbed to where these circumstances presented themselves to me. And if you're paying attention to what you see and what you hear, there are some continuity problems. If you're not paying that close attention then it hardly matters. :-) I was attracted to this mostly because the Bell Witch is a historic ghost story. And to some degree that info does come out in the story. The reactions to it are a bit tame, but at least they're not overdone!

I LOVE found footage horror films. Especially independent ones, because without a big-budget production company calling the shots, it forces and encourages creativity from the film. This, however was not an example of that kind of creativity. The movie started off good - most of the time when I watch a found footage film, if I can get through the first few minutes without losing interest, it's usually good. But dear lord, this movie was far from good. Throughout the film we seem the same thing repeated over and over and over and over again. Every night the daughter is having a seizure-esque screaming fit in her sleep. Her parents rush to her aid while her brother just sits there recording with a camera. . .and what was she screaming about you ask? When the parents ask her the very same question, she always responds "It was really scary, and dark, so much blood". . .Seriously? And that's just one example of how this movie comes up short. All-in-all, I must say that there was barely any plot, aside from "Typical white family movies into haunted house". I guess the acting was okay. (Most of the time). Only reason I give it 4 stars instead of two is because the beginning was good.

I was really incredibly disappointed! Mix the "Kid records his whole day on camera" point of view of "Cloverfield" with "surveillance camera" view of "Paranormal Activity", steal the better scenes from "The Exorcist", strip away all the suspense & thrill and everything else that was good in those movies, add some poor acting and voilà: you have 90 minutes of wasted lifetime. There are 3-4 "startle&scare" moments but basically they rely on loudness and are predictable. Other than in Cloverfield, you don't build up any kind of relationship with the characters and couldn't care less about them. I honestly have no explanation why I watched this piece to it's end. More than once I just wanted to hit that eject button and fling that disc against the wall.I even rented this as 3D blue-ray. Yes it is 3D but has no single effect that would justify the inconvenience of wearing 3D glasses. You say "but 3D glasses aren't THAT inconvenient!?" You're right, they aren't - but that's how lame the 3D effects of this movie are. I honestly feel ripped off by this movie! And I'm not talking about the money! Keep the money! Just give me back my wasted lifetime!

Being a Robertson County resident, knowing the real stories of the Bell witch this movie SUCKED!! When you grow up right down the road from Adams TN you hear all the stories and it would be nice to actually see a movie about the Bell Witch that was actually about the Bell witch!! Plus how are you going to have a movie set in TN and have the date as Jan and have a pool party??? Did someone not do their research or was this just another screw up and they got the dates wrong like they got the mothers name wrong?? Also it isn't Adams County...it is Robertson County, Adams is a City....and the cops that would have responded would have been county but "Robertson County"...again do a little research 1st!!!! Plain and simple this movie was a waste of time!
