Softwing Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
Hadrina The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Sammy-Jo Cervantes There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Bessie Smyth Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
cass-q I loved this movie, as it seemed to show a male version of learning, learning from reality and honesty about the responsibilities of caring for others - if you've chosen to do it, you have to face what is needed, and try do it, not just wing it, when you feel like doing it.I love the honesty in the film, love how the new growing girlfriend does not put up with him skipping over stages in the relationship and just expecting her to bail him out by helping with the sons when he suddenly needs it. Clearly he is a man with very vague assumptions that women's roles just simply fall into place automatically without choice and planning. This movie is great for showing his learning from failures, we see that planning overall is needed, to organize a house and home. I disagree with the reviewer who said the film lacked an ending: I may be romantic, but it seemed that Joe was learning with each lesson, and that by the end, he had reluctantly but realistically accepted losing his work role as lead sports reporter, making the choice to take care of his sons, and do what it takes to be there. One has the idea that he gets the idea that he must now tell his job not to count on him for emergencies, and if once in a while he must go, he will plan ahead.
edendadi To begin with, I hate drama movies. Only movies I like are comedy and action, maybe some adventure. But this movie.. has touched my heart. Maybe because of the fact that it simply reflects my life, piece by piece. The opening scene, at the beach.. I used to do that with my father back when I was young. My mom also passed away and I have a little brother. My dad is a widow. This movie made me cry because I sympathize with it so much. This film is just so real. I really have no words to describe how real and authentic this movie is. From Clive Owen's acting, even to young Nicholas (who portrays the role of his youngest son, Artie)acting skills, this movie is just brilliant. In some place it even brought some peace to my heart. I really rarely cry and rarely let movies get to me. But this.. this movie deserves an Oscar.Anybody who doesn't see this film is a fool.
trpdean This is one of the poorest movies I've seen - I'd no idea what it was about, but generally liked Clive Owen, so thought I'd rent it. It's the only film I can remember in which I actually yelled two or three times at the TV screen "End. END!" Owen plays the most Uriah Heepish parent I've ever seen. Extraordinarily passive - yet deceitful in many ways (Not least, as a top newspaper's sports editor who lies to all at work, and to the nation about covering the biggest international sporting event held in Australia each year - one can only hope he was fired, though there's an odd failure to mention the consequence).I've never seen a parent apologize each time his child deserves punishment. Child throwing things? Apologize. Child hits him repeatedly in the head? Apologize. Child refuses to get in the car to go somewhere? Apologize. Child won't get up from having a tantrum on the floor in public? Apologize. Child wants to throw things in the house? Apologize. Child cries because he wants to swim instead of be in school? Apologize.Say that you're deeply deeply sorry for every breath you take, every move you make - you get the idea. This is a creepy movie - the parent abandoned his vows to God, his son and his spouse to be true until death - and is somehow not made to feel the terrible consequences of his abject despicable treatment of his spouse. Why did he leave her? "I got (this sexy babe) pregnant". I constantly wished the worst for the protagonist - which I don't think the film intends. I loathe this movie.
conyemenam Clive Owen is one of the distinctly amazing actors of all time, and this movie is another film that shows us why. The acting, young and old is spectacular. Music is emotional, keeps you endeared to the storyline.I love the way it does not have the typical romantic Hollywood BS, even though that could have been a possibility. The film is very fulfilling. It is not about a problem that should be overcome, it is about a phase that is passed through in the most creative, adventurous manner possible. It is disappointing that the film did not get the critical acclaim i would have expected, but it was made in the year of great movies (Hurt Locker, Avatar, e.t.c.) but nevertheless, it is extraordinary.
