Cinemafou This was just broadcast in one go, the original episodic partitions merged into one showing as part of the Masterpiece series on PBS. I didn't actually get to see the whole thing, coming upon it as I did part way through. At first I did not know what it was about, but something quickly seemed compelling and it wasn't long before the story became evident to me. Then I stayed up much too late, unable to turn away.If you don't know the story, read the book first. If you do then you don't need me to tell you what it is about. But concerning this production, it blew me away. It is beautifully crafted and sensitively acted. The character of Anne and her interaction with those around her during a truly bizarre time is disarming and haunting. My big plasma screen may have helped, but it was the nature of the production and the intensity of the story that really pulled me in, making me feel I was in the same space with them, as a silent observer to the ups and the downs, the warmth and the tension, the joy and the anger, the hope and the fear.The ending was a nice touch. Everyone was accounted for. I could feel a sense of grief and a sense of closure, knowing the aftermath of what Anne was able to record.

didi-5 Sixty-three years after the death of Anne Frank, this drama presents the story of her years in hiding in five half-hour episodes, which focus in depth on the events within the annex above her father's factory.Newcomer Ellie Kendrick plays Anne as a fiery teenager, struggling with inner conflicts and her emerging sexual feelings. This couldn't be presented as clearly in earlier adaptations, and I think this is the first version to use pages of the diary as source material which were originally suppressed by Anne's father, the only person of the eight in the annex to survive the war.Iain Glen and Tamsin Grieg are both superb as Anne's parents, while Margot (Felicity Jones) and Peter Van Daan (Geoff Breton) present their characters' limited facets very well. Ron Cook, Lesley Sharp, and Nicolas Farrell play the remaining refugees (Mr and Mrs Van Daan, and dentist Mr Dussell).You get a real sense of what it is to live in a confined space, largely in silence, with only a few hours of respite to go downstairs for food (Peter has to take potatoes from the warehouse below), and to talk and live together in some semblance of real life. For three years this was the life for eight individuals and a cat living in close proximity, sometimes with hope, sometimes with fear.Rightly, this series ends with details of what happened to each of the refugees, and does not flinch from making clear the plight of the Jews outside of the annex, who are taken away in the night and herded into transports towards their death - such a fate also awaits the occupants of the Dutch annex, and it is with a heavy heart we realise this at the end - even though we knew it all the time, we lived in hope along with them.

Rafael Luiz I have seen many versions of Anne Frank's story and I was really impressed by the quality of this version. The first good point is how is portraited Edith, it's the first time we can see how panicked she was when arrived in the annex. The second good point is the reaction of Otto by a personal letter written to him by Anne, something that had never been shown before.Thumbs up to Ellie Kendrick, the best Anne Frank so far and Lesley Sharp as Petronella. Lesley Sharp delivered the best Mrs. van Daan just as described in Anne Frank's Diary.I'm looking forward to the DVD!

Framescourer First-class. Soap-length and almost soap-like, the great strength of this series is it's day-to-day realism. Free of invented sentiment or the sobriety of guilt or hindsight, writer Deborah Moggach and director Jon Jones work something believable and vital out of Anne Frank's eponymous journal. Rather than watch one finds oneself living through the action with its absurd pettiness and meagre (but treasured) consolations, with familiar tensions and thrills in circumstances not only unfamiliar but inconceivable.The cast are as high-calibre an ensemble as one could imagine. Impossible to identify favourites, I found the women most memorable. Ellie Kendrick is an ideal Anne, conjuring all the highs and lows of a girl forced to experience a compressed adolescence but leaving something terrifyingly real for the inevitable climax. Leslie Sharp and Tamsin Grieg play perigee and apogee of the Jewish hausfrau, pantomime dame and ashen-faced mouse: their Parthian ability to charm or bite can turn the experience of an episode inside out.Everything about this project seems to have worked - the perfect episode length, carefully-pitched drama of the highest calibre and broadcast at a time when everyone can absorb and, yes, even enjoy it. Highly recommended. 8/10
