This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

It is difficult to review such a movie without spoilers, but I shall try. Terrorism is always terrorism. There is no excuse for it. This is a silly, pretentious movie that tries to justify anarchy and not in an interesting way. Of course pharmaceutical companies shouldn't be poisoning people, but poisoning them back solves nothing. The acting is not bad. The writing and direction are feeble. The characters are unbelievable and totally one-dimensional---either all good or all bad. Not all young people are saints. Not all middle-aged people are evil polluters. Not all policemen are corporate lackeys. Let's face it, it has all been said before and in more interesting ways. The action is slow- moving and uninteresting. Watch something else.

THE EAST is an openly political film - in which a group of lefty liberals go after the evils of big business and corporations - but one which manages to make a few decent points along the way, namely the morals behind the use of evil to combat evil. It's not a very satisfying film, and it remains resolutely po-faced throughout, but it's worth a watch for anybody with a real-world interest in this stuff.Newcomer Brit Marling plays an undercover agent who joins a group of eco-terrorists in order to bring them down, but who finds herself being drawn into their schemes and lives. I found the actress to be entirely unsympathetic in the part, but others in support are better; a cast-against-type Alexander Skarsgard, for instance, alongside Toby Kebbell and Shiloh Fernandez. A shame we have the continually irritating Ellen Page along for the ride too, but there you go.Occasionally THE EAST becomes a pretty effective and tense thriller, and these moments occur when the eco-warriors actually get up and pull off some pretty impressive stunts. However, to counter such highs there's a whole lot of low-level emoting and sitting around chatting, and unfortunately the idealistic young characters just aren't very interesting to watch as a whole.

The East seems to be a very interesting political thriller. But I was disappointed. The East is rather a boring and long-winded thriller. The plot progress quite slow, and there is not really a feeling of culmination for the group (The East) we are following. We are following a FBI agent, who is infiltrating this environment activist group, The East. And already in the beginning of the movie, we learn that the reason the female FBI-agent have to infiltrate the group, is quite stupid. She is not really a FBI-agent. More like, well, you will se in the movie...And the ending, well, it offers a quite dull plot-twist, and it is a quite a anti-climax.And of course we have to see the generic kiss-hug-and-sex-scenes for the I don't know gazillion time, which we have seen in numerous Hollywood-movies before. The only new here, is a couple of gay-kisses.

This was a really interesting movie and it didn't take long before I was hooked. I think the reviews are far lower than what they should be. This is an intense drama, not a terrorist action movie. I initially watched about 10 minutes (about half way through) while channel surfing one evening. It didn't really appeal to me, but considering I just jumped into it, that shouldn't be surprising. But I recently decided to give it another shot - starting from the beginning - and I am glad I did. Again, this is a drama, with a real story – something you can't just jump into like your typical action movie. The performances are believable and the standouts are Brit Marling, Alexander S., Ellen Page, and Toby Kebbell. In the end, the movie left me wanting more and it would be great to see a Part 2 !
