I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

A thief works with his father and son to forge a painting by Monet and steal the original. Together, they plan the heist of their lives. The Forger packs 3 really good performances by Christopher Plummer, Tye Sheridan and John Travolta and both the heist sequences and the drama really worked nicely and although it's about a bank heist it still has some emotion since a father is trying to connect with his son again but also his father and that worked really well for me. It's not one of Travolta's best it has problems and certain things could been better but as a whole it's a nice film and not a disappointment as i thought it was going to be.

At first sight, The Forger is a "heist movie" with all the traditional ingredients: the retired criminal who is obliged to make one last job; the picturesque parade of allies and enemies; and the tenacious policeman who suspects something, even though he has no concrete proofs of an illegal activity. And, of course, the unavoidable betrayals and obstacles which complicate the anti-hero's plan. However, The Forger prefers to employ the "big hit" as a mere ornament of the authentic story: the main character's redemption and the reunion with his family. That was a good idea: adding an emotional component in order to bring the criminal plot more dimension; or vice versa: enriching the family drama with brief moments of action and suspense. Unfortunately, the affair of the robbery feels listless and lacking of tension, while the family drama is so predictable and manipulative that it's difficult to share the feelings of the characters. As for John Travolta, I don't know what he did to his face; he truly looks like a wax figure. Anyway, he brings conviction and charisma to his role, while having a good chemistry with Christopher Plummer. As the policewoman tracking the forger, Abigail Spencer made her best, but her scenes are among the weakest ones of the film. I feel that The Forger would have been a much better film if it had fully engaged itself with any of its two facets: it could have been an interesting "heist movie", or an efficient drama about the reunion between a father and his son, supported by the irascible grandfather as the "comic relief". But, well... the union of those divergent plots didn't result on a boring experience... it's just not very satisfactory.

If you like family values in your movies, you could do much worse than this. And while you might not agree with Travoltas politics or his firm believe in Scientology, this shouldn't matter watching a movie like this. He has fallen, but he can still act. Even if he projects more into some things than necessary.Still this is a decent, if predictable effort into the Heist foray. We know where it is heading and while only in movies people behave certain ways, there is a bit of switch with the story of a son who has been neglected and has to be won over again. Maybe this will warm your heart (not being sarcastic) to a degree that you'll give this a higher rating

Expert Art Forger Ray Cutter (John Travolta) gets out of prison early to spend more time with teenage son Will (Tye Sheridan), who has cancer. There is a price to pay for the early out. He must copy a Monet painting to replace the original at the museum and if not done on time, then bad guy Keegan (Anson Mount) will have Ray sent back to prison. We hope Ray finds his brushes in time. Most of the movie has Ray trying to bond with Will and this is nicely done. To help with the bonding Ray gives Will 3-wishes and true to a 15-yr old's thinking he uses them and surprises Ray with one of them. Later Ray gets his father Joe (Christopher Plummer) and Will to help with the museum break-in. Nothing says bonding all around like a family crime caper. The movie works because of the good chemistry among the three of them. Everything is low key and sensitive as we would expect. There are a few heartwarming moments and you may keep a box of Kleenex handy
.just in case. FBI Agent Paisley (Abigail Spencer) is trying to get Keegan, but when Ray enters the picture, she doesn't know how Ray is involved and what he is up to. We keep hoping she doesn't upset Ray's plans.Yes, glad you asked, there is a twist near the end and it's kind of complicated, but you will get the gist of it. The details aren't important. Over all a good story and, perhaps, one of John Travolta's best performances. Oscar worthy? Hmmm
...maybe. (7/10) Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: Yes.
