SERIOUSLY. This is what the crap Hollywood still puts out?

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

I remembered the title of this film (also known as Highbinders) because of the leading actors in it, I knew as well that it was rated the lowest of the low, one out of five stars, by critics, I was intrigued to see why more than anything. Basically Hong Kong police detective Eddie Yang (Jackie Chan) is cooperating with Interpol to try and capture international criminal AJ 'Snakehead' Staul (Julian Sands), who reading ancient historical books is trying to find a "chosen one"; every thousand years a boy is chosen to bind together two halves of a legendary medallion, and whoever has this medallion will gain super strength, amazing speed and ultimately immortality. This boy is Jai (Alex Bao), and one night searching for the criminal Eddie finds him hiding, he saves the life of the boy from a fire, but Snakehead is able to kidnap the boy and takes him to Ireland, so the Hong Kong officer travels there to continue the investigation with Interpol. In Ireland, Eddie is reunited with old flame Nicole James (The Rock's Claire Forlani) who has not heard from him for months, and also Arthur Watson (Lee Evans) who has worked with previously, he is not best pleased to see the Hong Kong officer. They track Jai to a harbour and shipping yard, Jai is trapped inside one of the containers, this container is knocked into the water with Eddie and they boy trapped inside, Jai is kept alive in an inflatable tent while Eddie dies from drowning, but Jai saves his life with the medallion, Arthur is shocked to see him reappear in the morgue, and his original dead body disappears. Jai splits the medallion into two pieces, giving one half to Eddie, and he sees the powers the medallion gives when Snakehead's men come and try to recapture the boy, despite protection by Nicole he is captured again and taken to a castle hideout, and Arthur's family are threatened by the criminal's thugs also, but Arthur's Chinese wife Charlotte Watson (Christy Chung) reveals her secret as being a police operative herself. After discovering Eddie is alive, Nicole joins him and Arthur to infiltrate the castle lair, they manage to get inside, but Snakehead kills Nicole and with the medallion becomes immortal, but Eddie uses the medallion to take away his life, and Jai allows Eddie to use it to resurrect Nicole, together their super powers remain, while Arthur is frightened with Jai entering a portal to another dimension. Also starring John Rhys-Davies as Cmdr. Hammerstock-Smythe, Anthony Wong as Lester and Johann Myers as Giscard. Chan may be charming and do his own stunts as usual, but Evans is sadly annoying with his attempts to do his over the top reactions and a little of his physical humour, the story is highly clunky and full of the most predictable moments, some fight and chase sequences were okay, but I didn't laugh much, this is just a complete mess of an action comedy fantasy. Pretty poor!

Once upon a time Quentin Tarantino was asked who he wanted to be as a child, and he did not hesitate to answer: "Jackie Chan!". "Medallion" - a movie for viewers under the age of twelve years, or for adults who have never grow up. Only children forgive director's obvious failures in the not to plot. Only children do not notice the obvious, if not arrogant, borrowing from the "The Golden Child" with Eddie Murphy and frankly weak actor's play. Well, tell me what the boy at that age is a matter about the cast and plot coherence? All this does not matter, because the main thing in the movie with Jackie Chan - Jackie Chan's self! Fortunately for grateful audience here is still intact. There are also his "brand" fights and jumps, and "brand" chase through the city (this time it is Dublin) for the next villain Warlock, who once again plays Julian Sands.

Recap: Police officer Eddie Yang traces known gangster Snakehead to Ireland after Snakehead kidnapped a holy kid in Hong Kong. According to the myth, the kid, with a certain medallion, can resurrect people and give them superpowers (like immortality). Yang, and his colleagues Watson and James, tries to free the kid as Snakehead tries to smuggle the kid into Ireland on a boat. The result however is that the kid and Eddie falls in to the water, trapped in a container. Eddie drowns, but saves the boy, and in return, the boy later resurrects Eddie. Now, Eddie, with superpowers must stop Snakehead once and for all.Comments: I thought they really had something going there. Started out nice. As I expected, a lot of martial arts and fights, all nicely choreographed and with augmented with extra aids (like wires), of course, but still with a good feeling and some nice touches. The story was nothing fancy, but they had found the balance in the fights. Just enough fancy kicks and jumps. Action director Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan were onto something here. Then came the superpowers. Then everything went just silly. The balance went right out the window (along with Jackie Chan/Eddie Yang actually). Instead of nicely choreographed fights we get ridiculous fights with a lot of special effects. Net result; Silly. And the story didn't get any better either.Jackie Chan delivers what is expected of him, he does what he usually does. But I can't do anything but wonder why the character Arthur Watson is in the movie? To add some comic element apparently, as that was needed. Watson is annoyingly clumsy, petty and incompetent and has mysteriously risen to a high position within Interpol. Evans plays the part well, I guess he does what is asked of him, but again, why is the character in the movie? Claire Forlani got the role of Nicole James, agent/love interest, of Eddie Yang. Though Nicole is much more competent than Watson she is clearly side-stepped both in the movie and with the virtual Interpol. Therefore her role is small, her potential and talent not used, her major part is as the one taking care of the kid (Doh, she's a woman - and this is a boring stereotype). She gets to show her skill in martial arts a few times though, showing she (or her stunt double - some shots make it easy to assume she has one) got them. Her only major fight though is, of course, against the female bad guy (to the sound of screeching cats... oh, come on!).So, the beginning was promising, the second "half" disappointing. On average a 5.

erm i didn't find it really satisfying, it wasn't a jackie chan movie, i think if he had more control over the film it would be a lot better. jackie is known for his out rages stunts, for exciting viewers, but in this movie he used a lot of wires, for imitating the superpowers is alright but before when he was just human some of the jumps looked really fake and was just boring and took away the excitement. Lee evans was great i love his humor. I think the scene that lost most of my interest was the scene where he was chasing Johann Myers's character and was jumping over those small tables and barriers and you can clearly see that wires were used for such easy jumps. I think jackie should stop being sucked into these Hollywood/English movies and start creating his own, which i believe hes doing now....for example...the myth (brilliant movie) a must see. i don't think its your fault Jackie, just try not to get sucked into those Hollywood movie areas, you deserve better credit for what you've done in the past!!
