A(mother) AWFUL 'remake' of a film.TO 'RE-MAKE - is to redo, I.e, 'update make, au-courrant.I'm NOT 100 years old, nor close to it, however, I saw silent films as a kid - and understood them), than ls to my father.I saw the ORIGINAL Out Of-Towners, on late night TV (remember?) and loved it.I ALSO work in …media, and whilst I DO understand 'maikng money', and 'updating' material (i.e., 'property') for a 'new' (i.e., brain-dead) market, I DO NOT get dumbing-down.This is a perfect example of why 'remakes' are utterly WRONG when made by IMBICILES.If anyone reading this remembers (is SMART enough to) the original (no, I don't care how old, you are, you recall the following; A man from the Midwest gets a job offer, and has o travel (with his wife) to NYC.They board a plane, and things go wrong from there.The plane gets diverted, luggage is lost, their reservation's lost, they end up in Central Park, and he (Jack Lemmon) is (almost) arrested for child molestation,and more.That was the synopsis of the (original) 1970 plot.Now - almost 30 years later, let me ask you;Do planes STILL get diverted? - Luggge lost? - How about reservations - they never lost?So, to be honest, not much has changed (oh, the prices HAVE gone up, but, what else is new).Instead, the makers of thIs garbage think that by taking the 'bones' - an then putting up on it totally new 'skin', they can come up with a 'yuck-fest', and keep the title.NO.This is pure - unadulterated GARBAGE.

The Out-of-Towners (1999): Dir: Sam Weisman / Cast: Steve Martin, Goldie Hawn, John Cleese, Mark McKinney, Oliver Hudson: Remake of the 1970 comedy starring Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis. It is about new territory and experiences starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn as a married couple. Martin is fired from his job but wishes not to alarm Hawn so he doesn't inform her that his travel to New York is for a job interview. They are bombarded with a series of incidences that mean little to the story. They lose their luggage, get mugged, get arrested, scale hotel walls, etc. Directed by Sam Weisman who previously made the dreadful George of the Jungle and this is not much of an improvement. Martin and Hawn shared great comedic chemistry in Housesitter but here their roles are props for bad writing. John Cleese appears as a snobbish desk clerk in what appears to be a tribute to his Fawlty Towers role. Nobody else can elevate this farce above the gutter area either. The original film regarded the reality of unfamiliarity to surroundings and culture. This remake merely takes gifted comedians and sends them through endless situations that we have seen countless times. What a waste of talent. For a superior vacation check out National Lampoon's Vacation and its worthwhile sequels. This is empty entertainment opting to replace any message with stupidity. Score: 3 / 10

but a truly moronic remake of a bright, acerbic, top jack lemmon film that actually had a plot and moved through it; this is steve martin after he stopped being funny anymore, walking through a series of stupid skits- a la wow, wouldn';t it be funny if the car they rent has a gps they can't understand and they drive through a fish market; hello? overall very slow, disjointed, bad one-off skits, and instead of being unlucky and chipping a tooth martin and goldie hawn are incredibly stupid; hard to imagine a bunch of Hollywood cokeheads sitting around thinking the rushes were funny, entertaining even; also missing the good origmal music, the period scenes of nyc that are fun to see decades later; remember snl- and the thing about martin looking funny and making odd expressions was that it was the kicker to really good line; take away that and the frill are stale and fall flat

One comedy that is so American that you may have problems sleeping afterwards because of the jaw pain you will get due to too much laughing. I would advise you to take some kind of Prozac before not to be too much overwhelmed by the silly situations this film develops with gusto and vicious pleasure. The poor people from Ohio do not have one gram or one 176th part of an ounce of luck when they come to New York for a job interview. The plane is out-routed, nearly out-sourced, their deluxe rental car has no air conditioning. They get lost because they don't know how to read a map, and then their rental GPS gets stuck in some kind of French sounding neighborhood and they end up in a fish-market or something like that with crates and fresh squishy things. 2,200 dollars for a 200 mile, at the most, ride. At the hotel they are kicked out because their credit card has been overdrawn by their own daughter. And that's only part of the beginning. Get to that film to discover the hundreds of details and risks out-of-towners run in New York City, an apple in which any smiling friendly face may be the worm that is eating the core of it.
