Synopsis

The air is thick with tension as a military squad proceeds to the foot of a mountain base, where they're ordered to wait for backup and hold their position. The mountain is shrouded in fog and the men are exhausted. They've been fighting guerrillas on enemy turf for some time, and they're worn down by the stress and anxiety of battle. The men don't want to wait; they want to charge up the hill, fearing that their comrades in the base have been overrun by the guerrillas. The squad's leader tries futilely to keep his men in line while dealing with his insolent second-in-command.

Reviews

Infamousta brilliant actors, brilliant editing
Tyreece Hulme One of the best movies of the year! Incredible from the beginning to the end.
Freeman This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Minas Gr It was better than expected! its not bad, its not the best .. Wonderful directing acting and all other things that are said in the reviews.Could easily be a 1hour 1.20hour movie though, not that much happens to be so long, but it keeps the tension through the whole movie, i never felt bored as in most of the movies nowadays, it manages to keep you in the atmosphere Dont wait to be impressed by the best movie, but it certainly Deserves to be watched:)
Tonypulp Hey there, looking for an action packed horror flick? Try somewhere else. El Paramo, or 'The Squad' (so we can all pronounce it fairly decent) is more of a psychological thriller in which a group of nine pro soldiers of a special anti-guerrilla unit are sent to an abandoned base located over a mountain in the Colombian Andes which has lost contact a few days ago. Why? Supposedly because they were under attack. At the time the commandos arrive, they find only one survivor. And that's where the game begins.Suspicion, paranoia and treason. The root of all evil is inside the group itself and that's what makes this film stand out. It might seem like a bit of a spoiler but I think it's really important for the viewer to concentrate on the right aspect as soon as possible, in stead of waiting on something that will never come. It is what it is, and it's shockingly suspenseful. The misty hills of Colombia are the perfect place for such an isolated horror flick in which the tensions get so high that you yourself will get desperate and confused. The visual style is creepily dark and unpredictable. Because of the mist it's hard to look any further than a few meters (get used to it Americans) ahead and that adds up to the 'locked up' feeling the soldiers must have. They can't go anywhere and have to deal with their fears and disagreements on the spot. When all structure is lost, who will come out alive in the end? Total anarchy, whooo! A must see if you're not a neurotic adrenaline beast, just sit back and get dissolved in this wall of suspense and strong written conversations. It had to be well acted to come across and thankfully they had a great group of unknown yet ambitious guys to form a convincing group of depraving commandos. Two thumbs up for this foreign piece of delicious psychological horror.
Flow I love different kind of horrors, I adore that blend with war, especially after seeing "Outcast" but this one, as many other Spanish, Latino productions, it fails to deliver as a horror movie. So, let's make it clear, I'm not stating it's bad, but if you get it for a late, cold night, it will seem overlong and will put you right to sleep. The comments here are positive, almost everyone is praying The Squad, but how many remember what the purpose of it really is? Enough with finding excuses for horror, "it doesn't act like one but it is so different", "such a bold approach", "new and original!", are nothing more that signs that you may want to stay away from this. After you watch it, you can barely put it in the horror section, only cause the plot offers 2 small clues, one coming very obviously at the end and one at start.Anyway, sorry to say, but I'm disappointed, cause I came for a duck, it looked like a duck, did not act like one, did not sound like one, so stop telling me this is a duck. Get a pair of glasses and problem solved!I recommend Outcast or Dog Soldiers.!Cheers!
Rob Charlton I caught this first time around on Netflix about a year ago and absolutely loved it. So much in fact I bought the film on DVD a couple of months ago (not sure if it has had a blu-ray release). I really can't recommend this film enough it is well written, well shot, well acted and has a brooding, claustrophobic quality about it that stands it head and shoulders above the large percentage of dross that currently boasts to be "the scariest film you will see this year, blah blah" I must also mention the score which adds impressively to the ominous atmosphere of this film overall. Impressive!
