Synopsis

Maggie and Sam have finally saved enough money to be able to pay off the mortgage on their home, and Maggie warns Sam to be careful on his way to the bank. Sam immediately runs into a shady character who offers many ways for Sam to lose his money, but Sam resists them all until he is offered a talking dog. San, figuring a talking dog is a way to get rich immediately buys it. He has many rejections before he can get the dog a booking at a theatre. Before the dog can exhibit his skills, a cat shows up and ruins the act. Maggie and Sam lose their home, and Sam ends up in the dog house, with a talking dog as his companion.

Reviews

Clarissa Mora The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
Aneesa Wardle The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Phillipa Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
Staci Frederick Blistering performances.
boblipton This 'Maggie and Sam' cartoon violates two rules for making a funny cartoon -- three if you include the fact that the gags are not funny.First, it is pointless to make a cartoon about ordinary people. Oh, you might wish to except people living in a different environment, like cave men or space men, but if you can film it using live actors in the real world or on an ordinary sound stage, then it doesn't need to be a cartoon. The other is a rule that either Friz Freleng or possibly Chuck Jones laid down: if you can make much the same points without any sound, then it is a good cartoon. With this one you can close your eyes and not miss much of this poor variation of Chuck Jones' classic ONE FROGGY EVENING in which Sam passes up the chance to pay off the mortgage in order to buy a talking dog. And, since you won't miss much if you close your eyes, I suggest you don't look at it at all.
