ekeby Almost all of us gay guys love this movie. It's sweet without treacle, and sensitive without being patronizing.I think it resonates with us mostly because Leo--blind AND gay--represents the isolation many of us felt when we began hoping for a love connection. When you're young and gay and haven't yet worked up the courage to tell anyone, the isolation can be overwhelming. You don't know who is or isn't like you, you can only speculate. And you can only speculate in an oblique, round-about way lest you inadvertently reveal too much about yourself. Keen observation seems an essential skill.In this movie, poor Leo is already isolated because of his disability. And even though he has learned to navigate the physical world with confidence, the world of emotional connections is another thing altogether.So much of the way we figure things out is visually. Surreptitious glances or prolonged eye contact become clues to help us find our way. So our hearts ache for Leo who has to figure all this out from conversations or third-hand information. He even has to ask his best friend how she rates his appearance; he has no other way to find out if he's considered attractive. Can you imagine not checking your appearance in the mirror before you leave the house? Checking and re-checking? This is why we love this movie. Coming out is hard enough for we the sighted, and little Leo manages it in a world of total darkness. In so doing he wins our respect AND our love.

Grace The film centers around Leonardo, a blind teenager, and if that wasn't hard enough on him, he's also struggling with his sexuality and his relationship with his parents. When the new boy Gabriel befriends him, it tests his relationship with best friend Giovana and opens him up to new opportunities.I absolutely love this movie! For once we get a coming of age movie that isn't about a straight, moody white boy with too many hormones, and get something that feels so much more real. The acting is great, and so are the characters and the relationships between them. Giovana and Leo have such a great friendship, although Giovana is in the friend zone. Leo doesn't think he should be limited because of his disability, causing him to be both rebellious and sassy which I love. Gabriel probably had the least impression on me, he was nice enough but kinda bland I thought. Although obviously I still shipped him and Leo, and the film keeps their fate in the balance until basically the last ten minutes which was nerve wracking to say the least.This was one of those great films that can have you laughing and crying at the same time. I would also like to thank the film for introducing to me Belle And Sebastian who I'm now obsessed with. I also quite like the fact that they didn't overdramatise the theme of homosexuality, Leo seemed comfortable in his sexuality despite being closeted and that was really nice to see instead of the usual inner turmoil gay characters have which can get tiresome after a while, if you watch lots of things with LGBT characters in which I do. Overall, a lovely little film with nice characters that you should definitely watch to unwind and relax.

Gordon-11 This film tells the story of a blind teenage boy, growing up in Sao Paolo. He has the support of a female classmate, who is his best friend. One day a handsome boy joins the class, and their relationship and their lives change drastically.It is rare that a film looks at the life of a blind teenager, let alone a gay one. It is even rarer for such a film to be good. "The Way He Looks" manages to be almost perfect. The first thing I notice is the great production. Every detail is attended to, such as the atmospheric and focused lighting on Leonardo when he talks with Giovanna in Leonardo's bedroom early on in the film. Sets are realistic and very well thought out, I particularly like the Braille decoration next to Leonardo's bed. Everything you see in the film is well designed, well thought out and well presented.I love the story to bits. It tells the tumultuous teenage years, coming of age and discovering oneself. It is so sweet and loving. It is positive and empowering. There is a four way relationship, and their emotions and dynamics are presented in a captivating manner. Giovanna's benevolence and her emotional roller-coaster add much depth to the story. In addition, Leonardo's beautiful exploration of the "normal" life with Gabriel is very touching. It is the simple pleasures in life that we have taken for granted that is the most beautiful.It is refreshing to see that a gay film that does not require nudity to draw people in. I truly enjoyed this film that offers hope to the disadvantaged population.

Tom C First off, let me just say this: if you haven't watched the movie yet, I strongly recommend you not to watch the short film first. I found that watching the short film first ruined my watching experience of this movie.I actually forgot how I stumbled upon this movie; I think the movie trailer was auto-played by the Youtube player. Anyway, it is indeed a great film, and I was so happy to have come across this movie by accident.To be frank, one of the reasons I was keen on watching this film is because of its high rating. It's just a few marks below one of my absolute favorites, Weekend (2011), which stimulated me to watch this film.Basically, this movie is an elaborated version of the short film. The two films more or less have the same plot. I always think it's hard to turn an outstanding short film into an outstanding 90-minute movie. This one definitely did not disappoint me. When I was watching the movie, I was thinking why it could get such a high rating. Well, the reason is really simple: it is genuine. None of the dialogues is misplaced; the emotions are heartfelt; and the cinematography is indeed splendid. The actors made the plot believable too: Gabriel (Audi) and Leo (Lobo) were great actors; they conveyed the emotions smoothly. I was surprised to know Audi's real age and Lobo's normal eyesight. I guess that is evidence that they really carried the story well.There are one or two scenes which can be considered slightly explicit, but they don't exist just for the visual stimulation. They carry weight, reveal characters' inner-feelings, and move the plot forward. You know, some films include explicit sex scenes which indeed provide pleasure for the viewers, but this movie is not one of them.I also loved how the plot is so simple yet heartwarming. Like some reviewers have pointed out, this movie does remind you of what first love feels like, especially for gay teenagers. The confusing emotions and the hesitation of whether to trust your feelings are revealed splendidly in this movie. Also, the fact that the film involves a blind character adds a twist to the movie. The plot is indeed a wonderful one, but after watching the movie, I can only wonder whether a blind, gay teenager falling in love with a new student who also happens to be gay is plausible. I'm not saying that the fairytale ending is implausible, but the way that the movie is packaged as "a beautiful youth story" took away a tiny bit of my love for this movie. Hence why it's a 8/10, not 9. Nonetheless, in this world where gay stories almost never have happy endings, I will gratefully take this movie.One more point to add: I don't know if critics have noticed, but clothing have become a recurrent theme in gay film and literature. Like Jack's bloodstained shirt in Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Oliver's "Billowy" shirt in André Aciman's novel "Call Me By Your Name" (2007), Gabriel's jacket has become one more item to be included in the recurrent theme of "clothing" in gay film and literature. The meaning of clothes is not just on physical but also metaphorical level, and in this film, Leo's yearning for Gabriel is best revealed by how he treated Gabriel's jacket.Let's just put it this way: if you haven't seen the movie, you need to watch it as soon as possible.
