Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay

Just intense enough to provide a much-needed diversion, just lightweight enough to make you forget about it soon after it’s over. It’s not exactly “good,” per se, but it does what it sets out to do in terms of putting us on edge, which makes it … successful?

Patricia Riggen's Under the Same Moon is a very good film telling a very uplifting story, which the story to this film is about a little boy named Carlitos (played by Adrian Alonso) who is living in Mexico under the care of his Grandmother while his biological mother has immigrated illegally into the United States in Los Angeles working on two housecleaning jobs for four years. Then Carlitos' grandmother dies in her sleep and goes to the United States to find his mother because not only his grandmother just passed away but also the young 9 year old boy can't take it living without his mother any longer. While watching the film i totally understood what the kid was going through but this was a film that totally glorified illegal immigration which is a possible threat that we face if illegal immigration is allowed in the U.S. which is the only flaw of the film otherwise it is well made.A definite B

While at first glance, Under The Same Moon can come off as an attempt to portray the harsh realities faced by would-be immigrants from Mexico, the truth however is quite different. This movie is about a boy named Carlitos, who's mother has left to America to try and find a better life for them both. Missing his mother, and despairing that she will never be able to take him to America too, he attempts the cross the border by his own means. The story follows his trials and tribulations as he meets various other immigrants along the way, and uses hard work and his childish charm to finally be reunited with his mother. There were touching moments, but they were few and far between. This was caused mainly by the flat, one-dimensional nature of almost all the characters. Combined with the fact that the story was implausible and that the plot progression could only barely capture the attention of the audience, this movie was overall rather disappointing. Clearly a heartfelt attempt was made to make this movie touching and meaningful, but unfortunately, it failed at that, with its poor premise, and flat characters. I'd give it a 4 out of 10.

Under the Same Moon is quite a compelling and interesting story. The movie is about Carlitos's adventure across the Mexican border to venture to Los Angeles, California to reunite with his mother, Rosario for the first time in four years. The story shows the many hardships that Carlitos's had to endure, but in the end his never ending perseverance pulled through. Under the Same Moon does a wonderful job of enlightening the viewers on the hardships illegal immigrants face upon crossing the border and once across. It also shows how far a little kindness can bring you. Carlitos's journey is an interesting one to witness blossom. His journey crosses paths with many people, primarily Enrique. He bonds with Enrique, who later realizes the importance of the journey to Carlitos and acts courageously in standing up for Carlitos. The movie has many hidden messages and themes throughout the movie that appeal to the viewer's ethos and pathos. The movie follows its theme of the challenges of crossing the border, whether it is a physical or emotional border. It challenges the viewers to understand what life is like for an illegal immigrant and it is quite eye-opening. The movie was all-in-all a strong and passionate movie with a strong supporting story. I would have to rate it an 8/10.

Under the Same Moon was an interesting movie that told a different side of illegal immigration that we usually don't hear about. I enjoyed hearing the story of Carlitos and how he journeyed from Mexico to Los Angeles in order to reunite with his mother. His story was heartwarming and it was nice to see a moving tale like his as opposed to the cold hard statistics that we are normally told. I liked Enrique's character and enjoyed watching him assume the role of Carlitos guardian, which was a big step for him as he was so used to being a lone wolf. I am glad that Rosario was reunited with her son in the end, however I was quite skeptical that a nine-year-old boy could complete such a journey. On many instances Carlitos was saved by extreme luck such as when he was seconds away from being sold into slavery, barely escaped the INS, and miraculously found the spot that his mother calls him from. I also did not care for the inclusion of his father in the story. When Oscar was introduced in the beginning of the movie by Carlitos' aunt and uncle it seemed like that would become a major part of the movie later on, but that part of the story never really developed. The meeting between Carlitos and his father seemed kind of forced and the audience is never really told why Oscar left his son once again. Otherwise Under the Same Moon was an enjoyable movie to watch that I recommend to others.
