It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

It's a comedy, a teenage movie...so, if you watch this movie THAT way, then you'll enjoy it.
But I guess a lot of whining "experts" here thought they were watching Rambo and expecting Mission impossible 7.

First of all, its hard not to like the movie. James Caan, Lou Gosset Jr, Paul Sorvino and Jessica Walters seemed to be having a good time. It just got kind of embarrassing watching these geriatrics try to be action stars (see my review of Bad Asses on the Bayou). Jake (Dylan Everett) is a teenager who doesn't believe any of his grandpa's (Caan) wild stories about being a spy. When he is forced to drive his grandpa back to the retirement home instead of going to a party with his dream girl, Angie (Greta Onieogou), he does not take it well. When Angie calls him for a ride after her car breaks down, he shows up to find her missing. Grandpa is convinced she's been kidnapped. So, the would be Sherlock Holmes and Watson, start investigating the disappearance. Along the way, grandpa recruits his former team (Gossett, Sorvino, Lawrence Dane, and Kenneth Welsh) to help infiltrate a hideout. Jessica Walters plays his former handler in the CIA who may or not be playing for the other side. The plot is so thin you can see through it. The acting is pretty bad and I almost didn't recognize Lou Gossett Jr. This is no A-Team and probably are more like the AARP-Team. Their attempts to get back in "action" are somewhat humorous, but are really painful to watch...almost as painful as the actors trying to perform the scene. There is one unintentionally hilarious scene where Caan's grandpa jumps a fence. You can tell its a stuntman and when the stuntman lands (below the camera's view) Caan stands up almost too soon and you can just see the stuntman disappearing from view. Its so obvious Caan was kneeling below the camera lens that it made me laugh. One scene that made me laugh out loud was the character of Harry (who looks like Doc Brown from the Back to the Future movies) trying to approach the hideout underwater. He is wearing a deep sea diver suit and is using a walker. The image was just too damn funny. The movie has some charm and its not without its merits. Its good seeing Caan again and many of these accomplished actors will be gone before we know it. It was nice that they got to make fun of their images. Still, this could have been a funnier movie with a better script and less over the top acting by the cast.

I didn't know what to expect when I sat down to watch this movie. And the reason why I did sit down to watch it was James Caan, pure and simple. This movie was actually surprisingly better than I had dared to think it to be.The storyline was good and entertaining, although somewhat predictable and generic. But it was the absurdity of the situations and the older actors that really made this an outstanding movie with their memorable performances. There were some nice actors and actresses performing in "Undercover Grandpa", with the likes of James Caan, Louis Gossett Jr., Kenneth Welsh and Jessica Walter. There is lots of action, well more or less taking into consideration the age of most of the people here. "Undercover Grandpa" was actually fun and wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

I would say don't waste your time viewing this below B-quality mess of a movie. The humor is ham-fisted and the plot elements are silly and rather ridiculous, plus the age jokes get really tiresome. The story revolves around 17-year-old Jake Bouchard (Dylan Everett) whose friend Angie has been kidnapped by a General wanted for war crimes and who is holding her in a heavily guarded warehouse. Jake will enlist the help of his grandfather Major Lou Crawford (James Caan), a former Canadian Special Forces officer from decades before, to help him free Angie. The Major will in turn enlist the help of his former military team to assist in the attack.I'm sorry to say, it's nice to see such stalwarts of the silver screen as Caan, Louis Gossett Jr., Paul Sorvino, and Jessica Walter in a film together but not in a rather lame vehicle like this.
