Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Rio Hayward All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Neive Bellamy Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
gracemoonlig My first thought after finishing the movie was, wow that was a dope movie. After thinking about it and rewatching some scenes, my thoughts changed a bit. From the moment I started watching it I could honestly smell the Star Wars influence. But, as everyone else pointed out, the first scenes kind of remind you of Avatar. And the whole subplot? Still Avatar. This obviously isn't a bad thing, I mean these two movies are holy in the eyes of sci-fi writers and fans now, so obviously similarities are inevitable. Also I'm pretty sure I'm missing more sci-fi influences and/or resemblances in the movie. I guess what I'm trying to say to you is that, don't expect anything more than your typical sci-fi movie. Valerian and the city of thousand planets is such a visually astounding movie. The world building is impressive, doesn't make you roll your eyes, it's believable. Alien characters are incredible. You can tell that the artists involved in this crew have made an exceptional job. I really want to give all of them a hug and a pat on the back. Story-wise though... Nothing really surprised me. You could tell what was going on or going to happen with just a little bit of thinking. If you want to shut down your brain and not connect the pieces while watching then I can tell you'll be surprised but if you're like me and like to connect the dots yourself then it won't be a plot twist for you. I feel like the writers showed their hands way too quickly. The villain was so obvious, yes he had morals but he wasn't a character for us to care about. We didn't know anything about him, so we couldn't sympathize with him. I think a good villain is someone we can somehow sympathize with. I'll just tell one more problem I had with this movie then I'll shut up: the fact that it's 2 hours but it could very well be less than that. There are lots of scenes that wouldn't change anything if cut, and that's always a minus for me. Overall, I had a great time watching this movie and I can only find problems if I look at it critically. As an average viewer I was not disappointed. A good choice to watch to have a good time.
chazzheaton This movie is such a let down, I have never read the comics that it is based off but I think fans would be hugely disappointed. The opening sequence is probably the best in the whole film, the effects are amazing, I love the design of the Mul, the landscape, the creatures, the event etc. But then it all goes down hill from there. I could tell the film was trying to use it's effects to bring people in. It would have worked back in 2009 but not today when CGI isn't new or *that* exciting anymore. Valerian is a bit of a Gary Stu, he boats about his achievements, but throughout the film is shown to be incompetent, lazy, and ignorant. I hate this character. Laureline is so bland there's nothing really to say about her. The interesting characters come and go so fast, we never learn more about them or why we should care about them. Like Bubble, her story seemed so interesting, but it was over so fast. The main actor and actress in this film are pretty bad, and I never really comment on performance but this time I had to. Valerian sounded like he was making his voice deeper to sound more manly, Laureline had 0 emotion. Her entire performance can be summed up with the :/ emoticon. Even when Valerian is in life threatening situations she doesn't seem too bothered about it. To say that he wants to marry her (says this repeatedly) there is 0 chemistry between the two. They fight more than they show emotion towards each other. Rhianna's performance was probably the best in the whole movie, it is a shame we didn't learn more about her character. The main focus was on Valerian and Laureline (well he is the title Character) but I feel more time should have been devoted to the story of Mul and it's people. There were some cool concepts, like the market in another dimension, but on the whole it was poorly executed and badly acted.
moniquesashe The romance wasn't really explained. Also, the diversity in the cast is pretty much just white actors. The aliens are played by white actors. Okay Rhianna was in it but that's one woman of colour. Acting was good but the characters were a little off, I'd put that on the writers. The sci-fi element on the other hand is amazing and I would watch it for the visuals alone.
eberkerbatur A space film with an incredible story of Valerian is really a very large issue, but it may sound like 3-4 films from this story, but it looks like some player choices seem to be wrong, especially the actor who plays Valerian is a very good player, but this role has been a little childish for a good fighting agent too weak and too small. The movie is another complaint, but it is a bit complicated because it is a little bit complicated. This complexity was a bit simpler. It could be an incredible film from this story. I think the film is still nice but not very beautiful
