Truly Dreadful Film

This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

This is the worst film I have ever watched. Firstly there is a psycho woman who lost her son in a Tsunami. LIKE GET OVER IT U STUPID C**T. Then her retarded husband gives a chink 1.5m to find the son which is dead. They get conned and stranded in the Burmese jungle. There is NO blood and gore apart from 2 scenes where, trust me, the death is so boring. I mean COME ON, the film's 1h 30min long. I got to 1h 26mins and the film just suddenly ends with some slut having her tits rubbed in muck, when there should be loads more. F**k 'dangers of the Burmese jungle' like three fat 8 year old's with twigs Please guys don't watch this s**t.

Well, yeah. That says it.From the description I expected something along the lines of Children of the Corn, but in reality the scary feral children have very little to do with this movie, they just kinda show up at the end to rub mud on a naked woman's body. Most of the movie is about the mundane, anti-climatic journey to the home of these not so scary feral children(who we only get to see briefly) so a crazy wife can have them rub mud on her naked body. You see, a rich couple's son died not so long ago. The mom is obviously not coping well and going nuts as a result. But she convinces her husband to pack a bag with hundreds of millions of dollars so they can pay Asian gangsters and human traffickers to lead them to some forbidden Burmese district, just to make sure their son isn't alive. So for the first hour and 10 minutes people argue, there's lots of rain, someone gets shot, and there's a sex scene. 15 minutes before the closing credits, feral children show up acting kind of creepy, the husband gets killed, and yes I'll say it again... the children rub mud on the wife's naked body. And that's the end.

VINYAN is a grim and gloomy film that details a couple's spiralling descent into madness as they venture into a jungle hell in search of the child they lost during the south-east Asian tsunami in 2006. Like AGUIRRE, WRATH OF GOD and APOCALYPSE NOW before it, you know with VINYAN that there's going to be no happy ending, and much of the suspense is derived from the ever-worsening situation of the lead characters: watching them gradually leave society behind only to uncover unspeakable horrors in the jungle is never less than disturbing. The film boasts not one but two strong performances: Rufus Sewell is the straight man and Emmanuelle Beart (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE) his unstable wife, never the same since the loss of their child. Had other actors been cast in the roles I might have lost interest, but these two kept me watching. That's good, because the direction isn't that strong: Du Welz goes overboard in his attempts at style and I found his arty camera-work to be more of a hindrance than a help as the story progressed. Eventually, there's a twist at the end and the introduction of some visceral horror elements that I wasn't entirely happy about: to be honest, I didn't necessarily think that they had a place in this movie, but they're here all the same and at least they give a sense of closure to an otherwise meandering production.

Fabrice Du Welz is that kind of director who doesn't make a film every year. The best known so far directed by him was Calvaire (2004). A horror that really took you by the throat. Vinyan was his follow-up made 4 years later. It's a complete other flick, still, it delivers some dark moments. People are arguing about it in what genre you would classify it, sure, it's a drama but the overall atmosphere gives it a horror feeling too. Towards the end it do goes darker and darker and once the children take over the jungle it surely reminded me of Children Of The Corn. As I said, it's the atmosphere that defines this flick. The opening sequence already gives you the feeling what you will get. And i mean before Jeanne Bellmer (Emmanuelle Béart) comes out of the water. The acting by her and Rufus Sewell is excellent. The score used is creepy too and adds toward the atmosphere. It isn't arty but it leans against it. The director surely knew what he wanted. The drama lays in the fact that Jeanne has lost her child and wants to find him back against all the negative advise. So she travels with her husband to the country she's thinking they could find him, but they need help from the locals, but the deeper they go in the woods the worser it gets. The horror lays in the fact that once they are deep in the wood and are depending on some guys money takes over and people are dying for it. Naturally the locals doesn't like what's going on and are out for revenge. It's low on blood but the last scene is worth watching.Excellent performances, great camera-work, good score, that's what makes it a special experience to watch. And for those who want to see Emmanuelle Béart in her nudies, she goes full frontal. Gore 1/5 Nudity 1,5/5 Effects 2/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0/5
