Truly Dreadful Film

Intense, gripping, stylish and poignant

The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

This picture has been on many times in the past and I always missed it. I'm glad to say I finally got to see it and was pleasantly surprised. Lots of horror pictures from this era are just schlock, but this had a pretty good story and holds your interest. I know, I know, but these are movie zombies, so for 70 minutes I suspended my disbelief and just went with it.A couple decide to get married on an island inhabited by zombies, but at the request of a 'good friend' who happens to live there. But who do you think is the Head of the Zombies? Of course, who else? There he is in all his creepy, sinister persona threatening, intimidating and glowering, and all in his unctuous, low key voice. This is one of the typecast Lugosi's best roles and is worth the price of admission - which in my case was a replay of the DVR I was smart enough to tape.

Released in 1932, "White Zombie" is a rather under-rated horror film. The film has atmosphere, a fairly good plot, a great performance from Bela Lugosi and good direction. The only thing I am a bit wary of, (and this is no fault of the film) is that a lot of DVD releases are of rather poor quality. It took me a while to locate a good DVD but luckily I have.

This is a very scary movie. 6.4 is underrating. It has a great story line. It also has great acting. It also has great special effects. I give a 9. It is very scary. This is scarier then The Shinning and that is not easy to do. This is of the best horror films of all time. It is better then A Nightmare on elm street and that is not easy to do. This is scarier then the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th ever could be. This scarier the Bride of Chucky could ever be. This is a very scary. This is scarier then Hellbound Hellrasier II and that is not easy to do. This is scarier then Halloween resurrection could ever be. This is a very scary movie. And if you good horror movie then you need to see this movie.

The overall acting felt so forced for this film. I know it's a movie with zombies, being alive today, i'm desensitized by all the high-quality zombie films out now so White Zombie seems more silly than scary. I'm sure for the time, people were creeped out by the film and the idea. But I was more creeped out by how slow and uneventful 70% of the movie was. Granted, it's definitely a classic horror film, but not one i'd ever recommend to anyone. However, I was pleasantly interested in the double expose scenes of the haunting eyes. When I think of this film, I think of those eyes and those bushy eyebrows. All in all, not terribly interested in ever seeing this again.
