jjparish I knew going in that this was a low budget horror so i did not expect too much. I was only watching it anyway for Maryam d'Abo anyway. And she did not disappoint. She looks an absoute goddess here. Engaging in, completely non essential to the plot, nudity. Brilliant. The acting was so so, especially the kid, the alien looked cheap and rubbery, the score hurt my ears at times. But it was not a mess. It worked. It was really gripping to the end and there were some genuinely disturbing moments. Alien rape scenes, a woman giving birth to a man, the father giving his son a love bite! Horrifiic.........Terrific!

Stevieboy666 A father is abducted by aliens, only to return 3 years later & find that a new man has moved in with his wife & young son. This British science fiction shocker appears to have gained many bad reviews over the years for being grotesque, silly, etc but I personally think that it's an excellent film & worthy of cult status. The many special effects are well done (so much better than these modern, horrible CGI ones). In addition to aliens there is a creepy clown, a life size action man doll that comes to life & a toy tank that fires real shells! Great soundtrack that adds to the feel, plus a bit of nudity. It did briefly make the Video Nasties list here in Britain but is not considered a bona fide one. I just revisited this on VHS but have also just bought the recent limited edition blu ray loaded with extras, I'm looking forward to Xploring that!

Michael_Elliott Xtro (1983) ** (out of 4) Three years after being abducted by a UFO, Sam Phillips (Philip Sayer) returns to Earth in hopes of getting his son and wife back but there's more than this going on. XTRO has become notorious over the years for a number of reasons but the biggest is its inclusion on the Video Nasties list. There's certainly no question that the film contains some very memorable scenes but sadly I think the film is a bit too weird for its own good. There are several moments during the final thirty-minutes that just left me rather bored because of what was going on. There's some extended scenes with the boy playing with certain "toys" in his room that just never worked. I also didn't think any of the psychological stuff works at all. The entire plot of the father being abducted and coming back to Earth has many small subplots throughout the picture but I think they all add up to a big, fat zero. I'm not really sure what the director was trying to go for but story wise this thing is pretty much a mess. Where the film does work are in its gore effects. I'm a little surprised to see that this film got a R-rating considering how hard the MPAA were on horror films from this era. Perhaps they were too busy with the slashers to notice how nasty this film is because there are certainly some very memorable moments. The highlight of the film would have to be the birth sequence, which contains plenty of the red stuff and is creepy enough to make you squirm watching it. Another highlight is the first couple we meet including the man who has to be one of the dumbest characters to ever be placed in a horror film. The performances themselves are actually much better than you'd expect and director Harry Bromley Davenport at least keeps the film moving at a good pace. There's enough to enjoy in XTRO to make it worth viewing but the nice special effects can't overcome a confusing story.

SnakesOnAnAfricanPlain A cruel and absurd cinematic gem. Only a British film could be so off- beat and terrifying at the same time. It had the uncomfortable atmosphere of Don't Look Now and The Wicker Man. I was honestly expecting an Alien knock-off, but what I got was creative, if ludicrous filmmaking. Set in Britain, we see a man abducted by aliens. 3 years pass and everyone assumes he just left, though his son is plagued by nightmares. An alien arrives and starts killing and impregnating people. The alien pregnancy scene is horrific. It's so detailed and gruesome, it really does make the chestburster scene in Alien look quaint. Not much makes sense after that, but I enjoyed it all. It was some weird messed up fantasy with a midget clown, toys coming to life, and dads sucking on their son's shoulders (don't ask). The effects are truly repulsive and fantastic. I pray for a return to films like this. CGI would have been so bland. It will take a morbid person to truly appreciate the humor and bizarre tone, but it's unlike so many films, where scenes of pure fantasy are played straight-faced and for real.
