This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

It is so daring, it is so ambitious, it is so thrilling and weird and pointed and powerful. I never knew where it was going.

It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

24 was and will remain to be one the best TV shows. The thrill, excitement, and emotion that Kiefer Sutherland brought to the screen was a class apart. This show, however, does not do justice to its predecessor. The acting was mediocre, if you're going to bring back a classic, the cast should match up to the expectations. Also, 24 got its name from 24 episodes depicting 24 hours of the day. If you're going for a revival, why make only 12 episodes like in 24: Live Another Day. Why couldn't they have 24 episodes? It's just stupid to make the 12th episode of 13 hours. The twists and turns that made 24 what it is were just not there.Overall they did a decent job but were no match to the original one and that's why it probably got canceled.

I watched all 8 seasons of 24, including Redemption and Live Another Day and oh man did this suck and did not carry the torch of 24. I pray to God that it does not get a second season. The story, backstory, characters, everything just doesn't work like it did with the original. Also, shouldn't we call this like "12" or "12:Legacy" or something because it wasn't even a complete day in the life of the main character.I mean, I could probably throw together a homemade version of 24 that you would actually consider using as toilet paper. This is just complete garbage. And the addition of a homosexual relationship that was completely irrelevant to the story did not help me better understand this show.Another thing is that Eric Carter's wife seems to know just too much operational details about ongoing operations. Eric was a Special Forces operator, he should know that his work stays in the field. "Get in, get out, get gone." Not "Get in, get out, get gone, and tell your wife about it." I will admit the only joy I got from this show was hearing about Edgar Stiles as well as the appearance of Tony Almeida. I would like those 12 hours of my life back please.

Through thick and, more recently, thin, I watched 24 from the first time it came on BBC2 all those years ago until the recent UK-based outing on Sky. This reboot of sorts drew me in because I like 24 as simple TV – no big complexity for me to process and good consistent motion for me to get caught up in, all of it nicely telegraphed and explained so I don't need to worry about paying close attention. In this regard 24 Legacy is fine because it does that throughout in the professional, well-financed, and polished manner you would expect from a Fox headliner. Problem is that the polish and financing only gets you so far. I think you can take a lot from the fact that this show had a massive starting point with the post-Superbowl premier slot, but went very quickly from a 20M opening audience down to 5M, and it has not been renewed for a second series.Part of it is that this is a series, even if it is branded as a reboot. As a result, Legacy has that pressure to continue to deliver the stakes and excess that the later seasons of 24 did. It does this with plenty of drama and action, but yet it has no base to do this really. The writing is the main fault, in two key areas – the characters and the dialogue. The dialogue is obvious – so much exposition that is focused on the minutes just gone and the minutes about to come, very little building for anything beyond this. With the original series of course we had this, but it was offset by the fact we had invested in the characters for years – here no such thing. Related to this are the characters – there is no time or effort to build them here. Instead we get dialogue to tell us factually the situation as quickly as possible. Eric and his brother is a good example of this as we are told as much as we need to know in a few lines of dialogue, so it is no surprise that maybe I do not invest much in them or their relationship. With this weak base it is no surprise that the season does not do much beyond distract. As with the original, the plot moves quickly through ticking-clock dramas, and doesn't worry too much about following it up but rather hopes that whatever comes next will make you forget; after all, this is a show that detonated a nuclear bomb in LA but hardly mentioned it a few hours later. So it is here, nothing has weight or consequence. Too many cliff hangers or dramatic moments are easily resolved so we can get onto the next one; it is an approach that works a few times but mostly reveals that you should not pay too much attention or care too much. Even the 'in the moment' writing is weak though. Of course CTU gets easily infiltrated again as it always does, but too much is convenient and unconvincing – regarding CTU's infiltration, we are asked to believe that an accomplice of Naseri had put the secret lover of a very specific security guard into a suicide vest hours ahead of that guard being assigned to the detail for Jadella even though at that time Jadella was not in custody and was not planned to ever be captured? This is the biggest nonsense, but there are plenty of moments which are close – and the writing needs to be a lot stronger to stop you noticing the silliness of these 'twists'.With the writing, the cast can only do so much, but even then they are still weaker than required. Hawkins tried hard, but he is no Sutherland, does not have the material to work with, or the time to build it up. He comes off as generic and dull and given he is the heart of the series, it does hurt. Likewise the new CTU staff feel like copies of previous versions; ditto the various politicians and directors. The show does try to get familiar faces and names in there but mostly people like Smits, McRaney, Otto, Fehr, do not get the material to do more than the basics – and the fact they have been so much better in other things just adds to the feeling of not doing it here. Repeat characters do the same – shoehorning Tony Almeida into this did nothing for me other than remind me how good he was as a character back in the day.In the end, 24: Legacy was a perfectly functional copy of 24, but it had almost no spark or life of its own. It tries too hard to deliver but doesn't build the base of character and drama that it really needed to. It is a big ask to restart such a big franchise, but this is not an excuse for the weak writing, characters, and functional performances. It is these that kills the show, making it a distracting piece of television, but no more than that. It seems Fox has not renewed the show for a second season yet – but why would they off the back of this?

Watched the first episode with optimism - 24 back, fresh start, new lead - Jack Baur was a great character but after seven seasons the character had become way too predictable. I suspect that was down to the writers and producers thinking that if it ain't broke don't fix it. First 10 minutes or so hit like a hammer but after that things for me started to go off kilter. The lead character seemed good but as others have said, the character had neither the charisma nor emotional range of Jack Bauer. I struggled to get through the remainder of the first episode, not because of the new lead - he did the best he could with the material, but because of the same old, same old, for example some people in CTU yet again running a secret off-the-grid op to support the main character because, and who could possibly have guessed(!), of a possible mole in CTU.The main female lead tasers her boss? That was as realistic and as cringe worthy as 'Red' Reddington getting a pen tube rammed into his neck in the pilot episode of The Blacklist. The CTU boss may or may not be the mole, a handler of the mole or just a plain old a$$hole. Annoying fecking sub-plots - terrorists should have at least got shot (no pun!!) of the wife, and where did Shiela E come from? The jealous girlfriend looks like she was getting ready to party like it's 1999. The school massacre sub plot made me want to ram my head through the wall, just a dire idea. Finally: As a great fan of the original I was willing to give this a chance but one episode was enough. No originality, none, and too, too frantic. Back in the day 'frantic' was one of the highlights of 24 but watching this episode reminded me of just how repetitive that had got and now, it was just annoying - no time to catch your breath. All in all a real disappointment. , just OK but has come up way short. As others have commented, lazy, lazy writing. Feel sorry for the actors as they deserve far better than the pale imitation of 24 they had to run with. Not their fault at all.
