Rachel Temple If you're a fan of British comedies, you'll love this show. It takes a little getting into but the characters are silly and the feel is almost always awkward, which makes for a good laugh pretty often. It helps if you're a fan of Nick Frost's type of humor, too. If you're a fan of shows like the Office, the IT Crowd, Spaced, etc, you'll like this show. Also, IT ISN'T RED DWARF! I hadn't seen red dwarf until after I watched this show. Just because they're British in space, doesn't mean you can go on comparing it to what Americans think of as the only other British space show. It's more like if you took The Office and set it on a spaceship. And contrary to another review I read, the hubby and I laughed out loud many times watching Hyperdrive. Don't go into it expecting a brilliant show, but give it a chance, it might surprise you!

ExplosiveAction While this show is constantly compared to Red Dwarf it is not a fair comparison. The other comparison of "The Office, in space" is much closer. I bought the first series DVD because I like Nick Frost and the premise was interesting.The show follows the crew of the HMS Camden Lock in year 2151. It features such British comedy staples such as the aforementioned Nick Frost (as the Space Captain) and Kevin Eldon (as First Officer York). They run into various alien races, usually resulting in hilarious outcomes, such as The Engulfers ("Oooh! Right up its mouth arse!").I will admit that the first couple of episodes didn't have me in hysterics but it got better very quickly. As for series 2, this is where the show became truly comfortable with itself. It is a shame that the BBC has not commissioned a third series as I would love to continue these adventures with such a fantastic crew!

botaknee It got better, and it keeps getting better. 'Hello Queppo' was hilarious, and 'Asteroid' brilliant.One of the most memorable scenes is Teal and York jockeying to push the button that destroys the Swiftian civilization on Queppo as the captain pines for his alien love interest. Freeking hilarious. Another great moment, crewman Jeffers entering the rehabilitation chamber and being bombarded with images of kittens playing with balls of yarn. I almost split my gut laughing at that one. If Hyperdrive keeps up at this pace it will join 'Coupling', 'South Park', 'Family Guy(OK, I've revealed myself too much on that one) ,' and 'The Office' in the uncluttered pantheon of truly funny TV sitcoms. BTW whenever I find myself watching too much of the above comedies on my Tivo, a line from 'Hyperdrive' comes to mind: "Remember, lager is not food. Please eat food with your lager."

Stephen Taylor Saw only the last two episodes of this spoof of Star Wars. Nick Frost leads a strong ensemble, with great support from Kevin Eldon (lovingly enlarging on his obsessive cleaner character from "Black Books") and from Miranda Hart as the supportive and consoling lieutenant. ("Teal, can you take your hand away from there, please.") HMS Camden Lock (non-London readers please note: Camden Lock is a vaguely hippie crafts and fast food market in north London) is on a mission to protect British interests "in an ever- changing galaxy". And it's crewed by as unlikely a crowd of misfits as you could imagine. When the warship strays into forbidden space and is fired on by automatic defences, there is no one on the bridge: they are all taking psychological tests. (Henderson, hearing gunfire: "I know what you're doing. You're trying to see if I can think under stress.")The gags and timing are mercilessly exact. It stands up to many viewings; the punchlines have become part of our lives. Can't wait toget hold of a DVD. "Be your best."
