Alice C I grew up in the 80s and this is not how the 80s were remotely. They just threw in some old cars and bad outfits, made a few references to Giuliani, Trump and Scalia. I guess the Paul Reiser story line was an ode to Wallstreet. I do enjoy watching Jennifer Grey, she is the most 80s thing about the show. The show is sort of a slow, drama. Sometimes funny but never consistent throughout an episode. A bunch of college age kids bumbling through life trying to figure out their path. Parents all in crisis too. None of the characters are super likable nor do you really care much what happens with them or the storyline. But the episodes are 30 minutes so if nothing is on it is pretty mindless.

Maximilian Kellner Ok so the pilot tries to catch people with boobs and more comedy than there actually was. Red Oaks maybe tries to be a bit of beverly hills 90210 .This entire run was mostly emotionaly empty not catching me in an dramatic way , it's just like the river life slowly drying out in the end didn't even feel up any panache or trying to leave that much of a message. The show is a coming of age and depicts a few everday problems of what to do ,jobbing, family and lovelife. Just maybe 1 experimental funny episode with a bodyswap. The best thing about the show were the actors most of them did a very good job. Unfortunately most of the characters aren't developing that much and there are many not so likeable characters which you just dont care about. The show tries to be 80s but only by the surface, the whole feel isn't very 80s from the way they talk the non existent expressing selves through styles, cliques isn't getting through. But the 80s sound was mostly present it had a few cinema references also put in to support that. Also it was disturbingly important to the show to emphasize especially the jewish and also the christian religion despite it not distributing any depth or comedy at all. Overall the series had a good watchable pacing which is kinda expected with short episodes and so much music, but the show induces a fastfood(surprisngly goodlooking) watcher experience quickly and easily taken aswell as quickly forgotten and left me feeling a bit more wasted.

BoomerDT "Red Oaks" is the name of a Jewish country club in NJ, in the suburbs of NYC. Set in the mid-1980's, after watching the first episode I thought this would mostly be a bit of a "Caddyshack" ripoff. While life and the people who inhabit Red Oaks are a major part of this series, it is more of a coming of age type of story about 20 year old David Meyers, who is an assistant tennis pro at RO. David's at that point in life where he isn't sure what he wants to do. His father wants to him to follow in his footsteps and become a CPA while David wants to learn film. He is also caught in a dilemma in his romantic life. He's been dating Karen since high school, a beautiful and sweet gal who is an aerobics instructor at RO who is ready to become a wife but David finds himself smitten by Skye, the daughter of the President and richest patron of ROCC and is the spoiled stereotypical JAP. And with this as the center of the story, we get to meet some funny and interesting characters. David's parents, well played by Richard Kind and Jennifer Grey, have gotten bored with each other and are splitting up. Ennis Essmer does a great job as Nash (short for Nassar] the head tennis pro and top notch seducer of the divorcees and widows at ROCC, who becomes something of a mentor to David. David's best buddy is Wheeler, a dope-head who dropped out of college from boredom, content to work as a valet and then bartender at the club till he finds himself smitten with the charms of Misty, a long legged lifeguard at RO. the funniest denizen of RO is comedy veteran Paul Reiser as Getty, the club president and owner of a Wall Street investment firm. Getty is an absolute arrogant prick who is used to getting his way and couldn't care less what the others may think of him. He's a poor kid who worked his way to the top and needless to say he's not thrilled with the prospect of his daughter ending up with an assistant tennis pro.As in any series, some episodes are terrific, others are clunkers. Enjoyed it so far, probably enough dangling plot lines to take this through 4 seasons.

terryjohnpratt I binged the second season. I really enjoyed the show and I am 68 years old? Don't let that turn you away. I imagine none of my friends would like it and that actually makes me smile. :)There was something for all ages. Many of the trials experienced here are just part of life.I could see David grow up over the 2 seasons. Most of the cast, Getty, the Father ,Davids girlfriends, of course Wheeler. Even though its just a "show" I couldn't not be excited for David and his future. Not sure of the future but walking into is with hope.As a cat owner i was praying Pops would find his buddy the cat.Grow up! But not to much:)Always be yourself Unless you can be a Pirate- Then always be a Pirate!
