Reviews

Stoutor It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
Taraparain Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
filippaberry84 I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Mischa Redfern I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
foster_fl History records Caeser's assassination on March 15th, 44 B.C. and the show begins with the title page March 15th before leading to his murder. Once the deed is done the narrator proclaims that on the 14th of March, 44 B.C., Julius Caeser is stabbed 23 times. Huh? Did I hear that correctly?
mattkloetemusic The fact that a Roman legion is depicted fighting out of formation like a bunch crazy people really bothered me. Instantly ruined it for me within the first 2 minutes.
doug2go If you like the Discovery channel documentaries - you will love this series - if you liked HBO's Rome and Spartacus - you will not. I was hoping for something like HBO's Rome but what I got was a 21st century running dialog about Rome during the reign of Commodus - it was interesting but I was looking to be entertained not educated. Given the ratings - I am obviously in the minority - it will give it this - it is well done just like my old history teacher.
Olivia The series presents an attempt to dramatise the life of Commodus, mostly from his ascent to the throne to his death. The documentary aspects of the series are well-researched, the story based primarily on Dio's Roman History, and the comments of the experts are useful. The re-enactments, however, suffer massively from inaccuracies. Starting from the lack of Commodus' luxurious beard (as well as every one else's, even though beards were popularised first with emperor Hadrian, some 50 years earlier), to the hairstyles, costumes, and, basically, everything on screen. Even the Senate House is wrongly reconstructed for the series. As such, it was very frustrating to watch, and I only stuck with it for the commentary and Sean Bean's narration.
