Intense, gripping, stylish and poignant
Matialth
Good concept, poorly executed.
Nayan Gough
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Yash Wade
Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.

I love dark, Victorian murder mysteries. This was well acted, beautifully acted, and has nice gruesome murders to solve using modern serial killer style profiling. It's similar in style to shows like this set in London, but the slight twist is that it's in the US this time. Anyway, very cool!

Good storyline with a Nice build up to a trilling ending.

Apparently this isn't a faithful adaption of the source material, I wouldn't know, but it's definitely a lot better than most tv series you'll encounter around a similar rating as it has on this day of writing (7.8).The Alienist is well made. Everything about the production is top of the line, the acting suffices, it's sometimes even good. It just suffers from minor issues in the writing, especially in the motivation of some of the characters, or the plausibility of how they end up at certain positions or locations but other than that, this is definitely worth a watch if you can get past the books.

This first episode has the same grim humorlessness that turned me off of True Detective. It's very focused on atmosphere but not so focused on character, at least to start. Even Teddy Roosevelt just comes across as part of a generic group of serious men being serious about a serious thing. To be fair, I'm also not big on serial killer stuff. I almost *never* like series and movies about serial killers. I know some people find them fascinating, but for me to be interested I need Silence-of-the-Lambs quality level. And this is nowhere near that.
